Default Unit for a destroyer lord?

I am definitely going to run a destroyer body lord in my new list, essentially as a wild card to jet around the board taking out stray targets of opportunity with a warscythe. Some people I know have suggested running him in a unit of scarabs, as opposed to solo. Problem is I'm not seeing the benefit of this - it will shatter his toughness and leave him vulnerable to taking excess wounds from blast weapon attacks, right? Most of all when he gets into combat this will leave him dangerously vulnerable to losing combat and being routed if the enemy focuses on the swarms.
Is there some huge benefit I'm missing to make up for all that?

The enemy have toget through 30 wounds first (though wound allocation is annoying).

Stick him with a lightenning field for some excellent CC action.

Ah, I see... I was thinking a minimum sized unit of three bases. So the way to go is to either max it out, or skip it then?

I always max scarabs, 3 on their own are not useful. 10 of them are lovely, I have tied up many squads for entire games and killed many as well. 3 doesn't play on their strength in numbers, hence swarm. With the lord they go form tying up units to mauling them in CC.

Heres what I would think. Destroyerlord w/ warscythe, and whatever else you want with 3 scarab bases. Turboboost diagonally so you don't get in his assault range, but will be able to assault next turn. You will get shot at, but you get a 2+ save, and your lord takes 1/4 the normal wounds.

actually, in the budding necron army I have going (750 points only :P), my scarabs have always come out on top, even in units of only three. at one point, they beat a squad of 10 genestealers (through a huge amount of luck), and then had enough wounds (and luck) left over to tie up a carnifex for the remaining two turns of the game. so far, in every battle ive used them in there luck has continued, but I doubt I can rely on it for very long.
