Default immortals > destroyers?

Necrons are my newest army, and i didn't start them with a battle force, so at the moment i dont own any destroyers. Every other necron player ive seen have used lots of destroyers, and i understand why, they are good, and have a lot of fire power. But in my games, i have found that immortals have been very good, and have caused just as much damage as most destroyers have seen. Now im not saying that immortlas should completely replace destroyers. But perhaps immortals should sometimes replace destroyers as like the main fire power unit. What do you think?

I think the fact that destroyers are jet bikes and therefore are more maneuverable than immortals is why alot of people choose them. For 150 points you get a nice long range versatile unit even though they are only a three man squad. The only other way immortals can move fast is through a necron lord by using his "deepstriking warp thingy". I forget what the power is called but if you use that power you are more liking to get assaulted by something and may lose that unit.

Thats always been the major of attraction of destroyers i think, superior mobilty. Retrying WBB use the monolith to teleport is nice, but thats means shelling out more for one of them :-\

destroyers have 1 more shot each and at a higher strength so they are a bit more capable of destroying tougher target+ better mobilty that's why I guess.

I prefer Immortals because they are cheaper and don't take up any fast attack slot I need for my scarabs and wraith! Destroyers are too fragile and expensive to be useful.

you should use destroyers in such a way that they can fire upon the enemie but the enemie can't fire at you.....then they aren't fragile

interestingly both have the same exact statlines.

3 destroyers (150pts) versus 5 Immortals with disruption fields (150pts)

Shooting
9 shots Str6 R36 vs. 10 shots Str5 R24

Assault
3A vs 5A w DF

For attrition shooting games I would favor Destroyers.
For in-your-face assault I would use Immortals.

Toughness 5, 3+ Armour Save, and We'll Be Back? Yeah, definitely sounds fragile to me.

Jetbikes that can move and fire their Heavy 3 Strength 6 AP 4 cannon at 36" range. Underpriced if anything.

Ah, I remember having this battle in my mind.

Let's make this debate more interesting:

Necron Lord with Res Orb and Nightmare Shroud on Destroyer Body with 5 Destroyers

VERSUS

Necron Lord with Gaze of Flame, Lightning Field, and Veil of Darkness with 10 Immortals

That's what I'm struggling with right now. With the Res Orb, we can rule out any "fragile" arguments (and by fragile, Gabriel, I think players were referring to the number of models in the unit), and we can eliminate the mobility issue and assault for the Immortals with a Veil. I've seen them both used in two different occasions, and both turned out to be incredibly devastating.

P.S. 100th post! Yippie!

I don't find that Destroyers really need a Res Orb nearby. They're toughness 5 so there isn't much out there than can deny them WBB with shooting, and if your Destroyers are being assaulted you're usually doing something wrong.

Also, I wouldn't bother with the Lightning Field if the Lord is going to be with Immortals. There's only 10 wounds in that squad... 10 Strength 3 hits? I don't see it as being worth the Points.

One thing I've seen is having a Destroyer Lord with a Lightning Field run with 10 Scarabs. That's a possible 30 wounds with the nasty electrical feedback. A lot more bang for your buck!
