One of my buddies plays Necrons and a few games back we got into an arguement about if the Gauss rule counted in close combat. I tried to prove him wrong with the codex but it doesn't say.
His reasoning was that it was like the 'crons were shooting in CC but it didn't make sense to me. We ended up doing a roll-off so we could finish the game but I'd like this resovled either way. Does anyone know about this?

No the gauss special rule does not apply in close combat, it is for ranged weaponry only. There is an upgrade that a number of necron units can take called disruption fields. This is the exact same as gauss but only applies in close combat. Only a few units; warriors, flayed ones, immortals, and scarab swarms can take this upgrade and unlike regular gauss disruption fields must be paid for which varies from unit to unit. Unless your friend took disruption fields he was cheating.
Units in close combat don't use their ranged weaponry, the only exception to this is pistols which only count as an extra close combat weapon. Think of close combat as a swirling melee, ranged weapons aren't used as the chance of hitting a friendly model is too high. That's why the necron warriors have axe blades on their guns, to give them some aesthetic CC modelling.
