Default The Monolith

Hi, we at the Eldar board are discussing the monolith - and we're getting really worried about it as it seems that there is no good way to kill it. However can a few things be clarified?

I have only played necrons twice and I have never faced a monolith so what I know is based solely on what others tell me. Is it correct that:

The monolith's armour never changes (so something like a bright lance will never make its armour drop to 12)
Nothing ever rolls more than 1 d6 for penetration - so therefore melta weapons aren't too nasty at half range and monstrous creatures only get to roll 1 d6 in cc
There are no strength multipliers so powerfists don't get to double their strength in cc against it and other special items/wargear are similaly affected.

Am I right or wrong and if I'm wrong please put me right

Two are correct, one is not.

You never get to roll more than one dice against the monolith, you will always have to roll against it's armour value of 14.
This is true.

But, it is possible to modify your strength against it. Witch blades, power fists etc still do their damage. The second necron battle report (vs Rhys Owen's Dark Angels if I recall) had the monolith destroyed by a dreadnought with a close combat weapon, these double the strength of the dreadnought, without one it is merely S5 or 6.

You can use these sorts of tools, a veteran with Furious charge and a power fist will give it quite a fright.

but its got to hit first so hit on 6 glance on 6 need a 6 to blow it up. Not saying it cant be done but... very rarely

Combat isnt the way to go with this bad boy.

For eldar its rather dificult to kill these off quickly singing spears and fireprism work well against it. but most other weaponry doesnt do that much.

I just looked in the necron dex and it doesnt state that it counts as moving over 6'' when it lands therefor penetrating hits can be aquired when it 1st lands.

So ya gotta toss everything you've got it at. bright lances and anything str 9 that you have.

But definatly dont assault it.

If you dont kill it when it lands that means warriors are gonna popout of it. So wait a sec then assault them intead.

Because if not your gonna get blocked in by a bunch of warriors who are going to have fun rapidfiring then holding you in place.

Lucky you, if you do destroy *the monolith then any warriors held in reserve for the monolith will be destroyed aswell.

a while back me and my friend were playing a 1k pt game and he had 1 monolith and some warriors in reserve for it. i poped his 1 monolith and he couldnt bring the rest of the warriors down.

I'm not sure how this works tho would the warriors be instant destroyed for 75% rule or does it only take effect at the end of the battle.

If you assault the front, you disable the teleportation ability, because the unit has nowhere to go.

And I know that it's not likely, but I have seen it work very nicely before. Triple 6's do happen, and every little bit helps.
