Default VOD, Fall Back and the wonder of regrouping?

Hi there! I'm pretty new to necron... but enough about me!

Yesterday I played a 750pt. game against Tyranids and an interesting question came up:
What if a group of Warriors is falling back and can't regroup any more, because they are under 50% BUT a lord with the VOD is in 6" range.
Is it possible for the lord to deep strike with the unit?
And if so, what happens with the unit? Are they regrouping (even though they are under 50%)?
The codex says nothing against using the VOD with an unit that is falling back...

Any ideas? We decided that it WASN'T possible... but I won anyway *woohoo!*

As you say, I think that it is a grey area. The way I'd play it is that the Lord can deep strike the unit, but they do not rally. Thus it goes:

1. Unit runs 2d6
2. Lord (if within 6") and unit deep strike

next round the unit runs again.

I could easily see a case where you had 9 out of a 20 man squad left and your lord was stuck playing phase out goalie.

But it also leaves the possibility that later on they may be joined by a necron or two from another unit. At that point that they are back above the 50% they can the next turn (or that turn, not sure) attempt to regroup.

It just becomes a matter of is it worth the use of the lords veil to keep that unit on the table for the chance that they might regroup later. To me it would depend on how the rest of my army is doing and if I could afford to let the unit go.

Thanks for the answers you two!

It's sounds pretty plausible that they keep on falling back... but the idea with the lord veiling them to keep them from arriving the table edge is kinda funny ;D

But isn't he part of the fleeing unit AFTER he veils with them? Ergo must fall back too?

He never actually has to join the unit, just be within X inches of them when he uses it. Heck, even after they they teleport and he is in base contact he still isn't joined to the unit.

Another thing to note, and I could be wrong about this, is that a unit that is falling back may still fire upon the enemy. So if I am right you could use the veiling lord to get more shots out of the rest of that unit.

Yeah, sure could. Mostly I'd use it to stay away from the board edge though, phase out is a bear.

Yeah I agree with paradeus. It seems like that the best thing the lord can do is keep the unit from falling back off the table, this would work best if the unit was able to regroup with another squad of warriors to put them above 50%. And unless your phase out is really depending on it, I think that VoD could be put to better used. Example: Putting Immortals in the best shooting position.

But you would have to be a real tactical genius or VERY lucky to achieve that...

Anywaaaay, thanks for the responses everyone!
