Default My New Blog

Following my progress with learning the guitar, in the hopes of helping other people who want to learn. Also going to keep it as a kinda of music diary.

Try buying your strings from ebay shops. You can bulk buy them and get sets for about 3-4. I use ernie ball heavy bottom slinky top. So 10 guage but the bottom E is a 52 rather than the standard.

BTW: Pick-ups are magnets wrapped hundreds of times with copper wire which enables them to pick up the strings vibrations and turn it into electrical signal. Humbuckers are double wound, the second pick up having a reverse polarity to cancel out the background hum you get from a standard single coil (hence the name humbucker). They are pretty easy to make, and a lot of guitarists who want to specialise their own sound will change their guitars pick ups in favour of one that fits their style. Some even wind their own pick-ups (I've done it, and it's quite boring).
To me the best sounding pick ups are seymour duncans.

Personal tip from someone who has been playing for 20 years... learn as much by ear as you can. If you can play a guitar by ear, your choices open up so much more as you will be able to jam easily with anything, no matter what style. I can pick up most stuff on the first listen, and can work out technical stuff within a few. Play along to your favourite songs and don't be scared to make stuff up.

I shall follow the progress of your blog!
If you need any pointers or advice just ask. I might not always know what I'm talking about when it comes to warhammer and debates, but when it comes to music and guitar especially, I most certainly do. ;D It's been my profession since I was 14 (I was gigging and making a living from then after I started playing at 10). I've also done quite a few sessions for other artists and a little bit of tv work too.
Seriously though, stick to it - guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn, but one of the hardest to master. If you get to the point where you can just pick up a guitar at any point and play what you are feeling, there is nothing like it.

Currently using the strings that came with the guitar, so no idea what they are. I replaced the bottom string I snapped with an Ernie Ball custom guage. I was lucky enough to get a couple of free packs of Da'ddarios too as they send me someone else's stand with the guitar by mistake. :P

Blog's updated btw. I would post more but it's 1:20am so I should probably be thinking about getting some sleep. ^^

Thanks a lot. 8)

D'addario strings are good. They are cheaper than most other sets too because they come with less packaging (not in individual paper wallets), though the quality is just as high as any other decent brand.
