Default Orphaned Land and Opeth

Recently you may have noticed I've been getting into the more progressive side of metal, as my Opeth addiction has shown, and I have just been listening on Youtube to songs from the album Mabool: The Story of the Three Sons of Seven. The magnum opus of Isreali prog-metal band Orphaned Land... they are incredible. Utterly astounding. They combine the Opeth penchant for heavy mixed with soft, going from growling death metal to beautiful acoustic guitars with little or no warning, but OL also compliment this with mind-numbingly awesome eastern influences, eclectic instruments, four different languages, awesome eastern choirs etc.

This band, along with Opeth have opened the doors for me to a whole new world of feeling, so many emotions are contained within these two bands, so many different nuances and styles.

Both Opeth and Orphaned Land are as haunting as they are beautiful, as heavy as they are serene, as powerful as they are majestic and as mind numbingly brillaint as anything I have ever heard before.

Orphaned Land - The Storm Still Rages Inside This song adds new meaning to the term epic. It's utterly magnificent from start to finish.
Orphaned Land - Norra El Norra This is a great example of the traditional middle-eastern influences on Orphaned Land
Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo One of the most powerful and beatuiful songs I have ever heard.
Opeth - The Drapery Falls My favourite song at the moment. Transgresses perfectly between so many different sounds and styles, equipped with Micheal Akerfelts astounding lyrical beauty and an achingly beautiful, hypnotic fade out.

Now I should end before I end up hyping these two bands out of the stratosphere.

In my mind they are the best prog metal bands (that sound good). You can also look for yes, spocks beard, dream theature and all those other that people label as gods.

This website also has a lot of good info.

You should check out Kayo Dot.

I was obsessed with Opeth for a year or so when they released Blackwater Park. Honestly, I'm mostly over them, as well as most of the metal I listened to then, but Kayo Dot is one of the few (avant)metal bands I still return to.

Yep, those are great songs to listen to. I still like the three consecutive albums Still Life to Blackwater Park to Deliverance. When I say I'm over Opeth, it means I don't see much point listening to their latest albums, it's largely variations on the same theme, they've become kind of formulaic with respect to themselves.

I've got to agree, Harvest is a totally awesome song, I love the lyrics and the feel of the song. It really does take you to the orchard in the song, but in a typical Opeth fashion there's an underlying sadness to the song.

In terms of their slower stuff I also adore http://youtube.com/watch?v=9x6YclsLHN0

have to say:Opeth are pretty amazing.

If you are into progressive rock though, check out a band called "Dream Theatre".

and sure, while im here, here is a shameless plug: Machinae Supremacy. Lots of awesome songs. They truly sound like no one else out there. SID metal. think nightwish, only heavier, and replace the singer with Billy Corgan, and the synth with a mega drive, and you get the idea...
Rob is an awesome lyricist (and an awesome guy!), Jonas is the coolest thing to happen to the guitar in the last 10 years, and overall, its just a "breath of fresh air", and that something new, and something special.

plus, they give away most of their stuff for free:
epic moments http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/compilation-1.php
early moments http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/compilation-2.php
instrumentals http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/compilation-3.php
a video game soundtrack. time to bring out the mega drive!! http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/jng-1.php

They are the grey warriors, ashen like the wolf, whose greatest joy is to hear the clamour of steel amidst the din of war. None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. Through the storms of the warp they come, upon the very tides of terror, but of such dangers they are uncaring. They are the Space Wolves, the Undefeated, the bane of the Emperor's foes."

<3 Tim, and I have to say that those weren't my personal bests.
Black Rose Immortal and The Baying of the Hounds are. To go with the slow stuff...
I have to say To Rid the Desease and Face of Melinda. and now for another band from me.

Its all with the official video clips
It's a progressive rock/metal band, like Opeth, but its completly different.
