Default Hail the Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge

If you don't know who Alestorm are, they're a Scottish Pirate Metal band.

If you don't know who Captain Morgan is, consult your nearest bottle of Rum.

Captain Morgan's Revenge is the first official CD release by Alestorm (formerly Battleheart). Half the tracks are new, half are remakes of their Battleheart material. However, it all blends nicely.

Anyway, this is simply a post to say to all of you out there; buy this CD! You will not regret it, particularly if you're drunk at the time.

Ever since I got broadband last week, a day hasn't gone by where I haven't gone on youtube to listen to their stuff. They really are absolutely fething epic, very like Turisas but less polished and more piratey. Their lyrics are kick ass and the music is incredibly powerfull, I also love that their singer is far more suited to a pirate theme than he is as simply an accomplished vocalist. Shows dedication to a theme and a lack of any desire to sell out.

If I ever see their album on sale then I will buy it without a moments hesitation, but currently I'm skint so there goes that idea.

I got one of their songs that came with the Battle Metal CD in February's Metal Hammer magazine. And, of course, I have all their old Battleheart stuff.

Tis good drinking music, for sure.

I couldn't drink to Alestorm, I'd feel bad because I'd be downing lager because I can't find anywhere that sells mead. You have to do it right by the band, any thing other than ale or mead would be a betrayal.

This is why I love Alestorm... a few lyrics from Huntmaster:

"With the Power of Ale, he could not fail!"
"Up from the bowels of Hell he sailed / armed with a tankard of freshly brewed Ale!"
"To bring back Beer to the lands of the free / this is his quest, his true destiny!"

They're not bad ;D
But was it necessary to create new genre for that? It is power metal. With lyrics about pirates and beer, but it's still power metal. Does it mean that, if I play death metal, and sing about cows, sheeps and goats, I play "Farm Metal"?

Actually, they draw heavily on Folk Metal bands like Korpiklaani (they did a cover of Journeyman), so some of their stuff is more Folk than Power. However, it is all 100% Pirate.

So yes, it was necessary; nobody has ever really done Pirate Metal before. Viking Metal, yes, but not Pirate.

I'm buying that album right now. I looked them up on YouTube and I love it. My first impression is that they sounded a lot like Korpiklaani, but with wonderfully cleaner (read: understandable) vocals. Never a bad thing.

I listened to Over the Seas and Wenches and Mead. Two amazing songs.
