Default Is there something wrong with my music?

Not so much the bands I listen to - but the time when they came from. I was in a convesation with one of my friends today and the subject of music came up, I managed to steer away from another Trivium Vs. Maiden argument but wound up realising that most of the bands that I listen to came about when my parents were young!!

So, frantically I made myself a list in my head, declaring anything from the past 10 years as modern, and anything before hand as "old". The results kinda scared me -
[tt](based on when the band released their first album / single, and which I regulary listen to)[/tt]

Modern:
System of a Down (4 albums)
Linkin Park (4 albums)
Dragon Force (2 Albums)
Lacuna Coil (1 Album)
Nightwish (5 albums) (unsure - I think they released carpenter in 1996, but that may be the year they became a proper band)

Old / Vintage / classic:
Iron Maiden (13 albums)
Machine Head (2 albums)
Megadeth (3 Albums)
Judas Priest (2 albums)
Led Zepplin (3 albums)
Rush (3 albums)
Queen (1 Album)
Rolling stones (1 Album)
Guns n Roses (2 albums)
Boston (1 Album)

(all albums have either been bought by me, given to me as a present, or ripped onto iTunes from a bought CD)

New: 16
Old: 31

Almost double old albums than new albums. Coupled with my almost natural dislike for any new metal band and I'm kinda scared - am I already living in the past? Or does modern day music just not my thing?

Thoughts?

there is nothing wrong with your music, maybe the old stuff is just better than the newer music, i own several motörhead albums and catch myself very often that i listen them more often than my newer cd's :P

Some of those 'old' bands are still around and making records today. Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Machine Head (how old are these guys? They seem relatively new to me) have all put out albums in the past few years. Even Judas Priest is still kicking, Angel of Retribution came out in 2004 and I'm pretty sure they're working on another...

While I wouldn't agree with you on choices(albeit I'm not here to argue musical tastes), I to lie in this situation, But I've come to accept that music has dramatically decreased in value over the years. I will forever find myself stuck in the late 80's and early 90's, asking people if they have a copy of Daydream Nation, Mellow gold or anything by Pavement.

Short answer: you aren't living in the past, it just seems to be the opinion that many metal fans with similar tastes as you can't find anything to enjoy from most recent metal bands.

It really depends on what you listen to for whether you can find stuff in the present and/or the past, in your case, just the former.

I may have rambled a bit and I apologize to anyone not caring about my long and convoluted explanation of musical tastes and just so you knwo I could have made it longer ;D

Huh, 80% of the stuff I listen to comes from bands that formed before I was born, 60% of that 80% was made before I was born. The rest is mostly from the 90s with a few modern songs thrown in.

I don't like much of today's music.

Who cares what era the music is from? If that's what you like, then who cares? Don't let people tell you what to listen to. It's not them who has to listen to music they don't enjoy.

1994/5. The reason why they seem reletively new is because they lost themselves in the wave of Nu'Metal and have only just refound their heavy metal roots with Through the ashes of empires.

Thanks for all of your opinions. And yes, whilst people opinions can be ignored I am just that bit worried that when I grow up and have kids I will never be able to say "back in my day we had real music!" as the vast majority of it comes from before my time :-\
