Default 8 Bit music maker?

I'm currently taking on my biggest programming project yet (http://www.plainmath.net/downloads.html- A program that does Texas Hold 'Em, Systems of Linear Equations, and the Law of Cosines), which happens to be an adventureish puzzle game of sorts. To get it even more in the spirit of old-time crappy graphic games, like the original ADVENTURE game, I was looking to find some of that 8-bit music to put in it. Of course, I would prefer if i could just compose my own. I figure there has to be a 8-bit music maker out there somewhere.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

SID chips.

its the chip that was used in the commodore 64. apparently, there are a few companies around that specialise in this kinda stuff, but i have no specifics. you'll have to do the searching! but SID chips are what you want!

this band uses them: www.machinaesupremacy.com free downloads. look at "releases" and then "webography". the SIDologies, the great Gianna Sisters and Winterstorm are the 3 best examples of the types of bleeps, and bloops and all sorts of 8-bit madness that can be done with SID chips.

they also have a sideproject called hubnester industries which makes soundtracks for games, adds, movies etc. same SID chips. www.hubnester.com

have a look. maybe its not exactly what you want, but its what comes to my mind when i think of video game sounds.

None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. Through the storms of the warp they come, upon the very tides of terror, but of such dangers they are uncaring. They are the Space Wolves, the Undefeated, the bane of the Emperor's foes."

Well if you are familiar with fruity loops, there are great plugins for that, thats what I use to make chiptune.

If you dont have that, I reccomend 2a03.org. NerdTracker II is the best DOS based 8bit software out there. The site also has all the NSF to MIDI converters you need. Theres also a forum that'll probobly help you out too.
