Default Genres, Styles and band articles

Introduction

The purpose of this topic is one of education - your own. If you want to get more into a genre but don't quite know what it is specifically that you like about it, hopefully the information contained within can tell you more... This should help all of us music lovers to broaden our horizons and listening experiences, as well as even expose us to genres we didn't think of, have heard of, or would indeed ever even think we would like. Also, you may find a genre you didn't know existed!

It is my personal belief that every genre of music has something for all of us; we just need to find the interpretation that suits us best.

If you want something added to these lists, PM me. I will then link to that topic, within this topic (provided it provides good, useful information for prospective listeners).

One of the reasons that I have not included broad labels and grouping of the music (such as grouping Detroit, Old Skool, and Techno under "Dance") is because of the very subjectivity of music's nature. It is a subjective process that has a lot to do with the individual's personal understanding and way of listening to music. This is especially true in sub-genres. One example is Led Zeppelin, which could be called heavy metal, hard rock, or blues, depending on one's interpretation. Another difficulty with grouping artists into genres is that, for many, their style of music changes over time.

Some genre labels are quite vague, and may be contrived by critics; post-rock, for example, is a term devised and defined by Simon Reynolds. Another example of this is video game music, which while defined by its media, can also represent its own style, as well as that of any other musical genre.

I will however be grouping all genres alphabetically (when I get the time) to save you time when you wish to find something. To help yourself even further, please consider using the search function.

Searching
It is generally frowned upon to ask questions answered by simply searching around yourself. Please use the Browser Search/Find function to find the content you're looking for. The Find/Search Function can be found by going to Edit > Find (in IE and Firefox) or by pressing [ctrl]+[f] (also in IE and Firefox). This is for things you wish to find on one page.
For a forum-wide search, there is a Search Function on the forums allowing members to search for topics of interest, but more importantly it allows users to check to see if the topic they are creating has been created before. Doing this would mean topics do not recur so people don't waste their time repeating what has already been said. Furthermore it is extremely irritating to senior members here as we have posted regarding certain topics over and over and over, which is not enjoyable. So I ask all members who are posting here to first check whether their topic has already been done.

Largely you will find threads like that locked, and yourself redirected here (so that you can tell how to search, not to look at our styles genres and bands). Do take the time to read these. We donít write them by bashing our heads against the keyboard, we put serious thought, time and effort in to help people like yourself out.
Have fun, and happy posting. Remember, any problems, just give me a hoi via PM. Anytime, itís always welcome.
