Default Kroot

I was flicking through my brother's Tau Codex, and I was wondering why you would take a Shaper. Maybe I've missed something apart from more wounds so please help me out!

Where to start...

He can take a pulse rifle/carbine.

He boosts Ld up to 8.

He has 3 (!!!) attacks.

AND he can give your whole squad a 6+ save.

What's not to like?

Ld 8 is kinda nice.

Kroot are more cost-efficient in terms of number of attacks

the 6+ save casts a point per model and is negated by anything stronger than a Lasgun. And it's 6+.

Not much to like.

I've never taken one with my Tau army. I took them with Kroot Merc armies though, where they're worth it.

They were a bit more useful in 3rd ed then in 4th/5th.

But overall crazy and kaffl pretty much covered everything.

He's a bit better in 5th edition since the wound allocation rules are more clear. In 4th it was never clear whether you could use the shaper to soak up a couple of wounds to avoid removing models. In 5th, he's sometimes necessary for the leadership bonus, but overpriced. Look at it this way: A shaper shoots like 1 carnivore, he attacks in melee like 2 (ignoring charge bonus for the moment), he takes wounds like 3, but he costs like 4. I use him occasionally, and very rarely I notice my un-shaped kroot squad failing a leadership roll by one, but generally I'd rather have 4 more carnivores than 1 shaper.

He's still useful in big games wheree you have to maximise your force slots but don't want multiple detachments. (I think)

Their rifle counts as a pair of close combat weapons, so their base attack # increases from 1 to 2, and a charge increases again so 3 attacks on charge.

The shaper has 3 base, +1 for rifle and +1 for charge = 5 attacks! Yay!

The Ld bonus is the only real reason to take a shaper. Regular kroot, or kroothounds provide better offense point for point, and as already mentioned, the pulse upgrade isnt worthwhile.

Also, the armor upgrade simply isnt worth it. It's worthless against shooting, and in melee, you again would be better off simply buying more kroot.

However, once you have a nice large block of kroot, perhaps some hounds, the extra Ld helps keep them from running after a bad round.

It's been almost 5 month since the last person replied. I know minor is slow, but still we should try to avoid threadomancy.
