Greetings all of my fellow Kroot. I'm just going to go ahead and post some general Kroot fluff/history to go ahead and get that here for a baseline.

(all of this ripped straight from Wikipedia for simplicity's sake http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kroot)

Physiology

The Kroot, while humanoid in appearance, are believed to have evolved from a carrion-eating avian form, as they possess beaks and a light bone structure. They have four digits on their hands (arranged in a zygodactylic form) and feet. While tall and wiry, they have an extremely strong musculature, coupled with quick reflexes, and are stronger than humans of equal size and weight. Their heads are crowned with tough quills that form part of their sensory apparatus; these connect to the brain via ganglia. Kroot eyes have no pupil, are generally milky white in colouration, and can see into the infrared spectrum, allowing Kroot to track their prey by body heat.

Kroot do not urinate or defecate. This is because they possess an incredibly effective digestive system. What cannot be digested is regurgitated, and some chemicals are released as a thick sweat. This sweat has slight heat retardant and antibiotic properties, and can be altered by the Kroot to exude a variety of pheromones. These pheromones can be controlled and altered, and are a component of the Kroot language. They are also used to control other animals, mark territory or trails, and (according to one Tau researcher), are a component of Kroot humour towards outsiders.

One of the most peculiar biological traits of the Kroot is their ability to rapidly evolve, with the capability for significant changes over four or five generations. The digestive system of the Kroot is able to extract DNA from their food, which is then incorporated into that particular Kroot's DNA structure. Selective breeding ensures that these consumed traits become present in later generations. However, this is not without risk, as the new traits can be accompanied by a loss in sentience, and some Kroot have been trapped in evolutionary dead ends.

Other Kroot forms

The species known as the Kroot are the most common lifeform on their homeworld, Pech. However, because of the ability of the Kroot to absorb genetic material from their prey, and the inherent risks of over-absorbing and becoming locked into a single evolutionary form, several species of fauna are known to share the same genetic root as the Kroot. In many families of fauna, there is at least one example with a 99% correlation to the Kroot genome.

Below are listed some of the more common Krootiforms.

* Kroot Hound - Canine pack hunters, used by the Kroot as hunting hounds. They are believed to be the result of a Kroot kindred's attempts to emulate a successful pack hunter, which failed when they became locked in that form. Kroot Hounds are notoriously bad tempered, and have been known to attack their keepers on rare occasion.
* Krootox - Ape-like, ground-dwelling herbivores. They are used by the Kroot as beasts of burden, and are occasionally used as a mobile weapons platform by Kroot squads.
* Knarloc - Dromaeosaurid riding beasts used by some Kindreds. There are at least two varieties of Knarlocs – Hunting and Riding. In-game, these are represented by different models: Hunting Knarlocs are produced by Forgeworld, while there are no figures currently produced for Riding Knarlocs.
* Great Knarloc - Large dinosaur-like predators, used by the Kroot primarily as beasts of burden. Some examples are ridden into battle by a pair of Kroot, one guiding the Great Knarloc, while the other utilised a heavy weapon strapped to the creature's back.
* Kroothawk - An avian seen as sacred by the Kroot. The Tau believe this to be the Kroot's evolutionary ancestor.
* Krootbird - A larger terrestrial version of the Kroothawk that has lost its ability to fly but is instead a powerful runner. It closely resembles a terror bird.

There are other Krootforms that are considered 'outcasts' in Kroot society and are killed if found.

History

The Kroot lived a tribal existence on their homeworld of Pech, which is located to the galactic north-east of the Tau homeworld.

At some point in their history, Pech was visited by an Ork Rok. The survivors were faced by a warrior race with a 'taste for flesh', and subsequently wiped out. As Ork knowledge is encoded in their DNA (see Ork biology), the Kroot were quickly able to mimic aspects of Ork technology within a few generations.

Over the next thousand years, Pech's primary continent became host to at least five Kroot 'hive cities', each containing millions of Kroot. Farming and mining became commonplace during a time known as the 'Kroot Expansionist Phase'. The Kroot were able to construct crude Warp-capable vessels, known as warspheres. With these, the Kroot were able to colonize numerous worlds.

During this time, the Kroot encountered the Orks again, but in this instance the Orks had the advantage. Untried leaders and untested tactics resulted in a string of defeats for the Kroot, as they were forced off their newly-claimed worlds. The Kroot were forced to fight a guerrilla war on their own worlds, and many Kindreds who escaped the initial slaughter became mercenaries for other races to survive. The Orks were able to invade Pech, and at one point less than 50,000 Kroot remained.

During this time of crisis, the Tau first encountered the Kroot while exploring their region of space; first their dead bodies on a world razed by the Orks, then when two Kroot Warspheres unintentionally led an Ork fleet into the midst of a Tau colonisation fleet. Soon after meeting the Kroot, the commander of the colonisation fleet learned that another Ork fleet was entering the system. He ordered the fleet's colonist passengers and attendant Hunter Cadres to the surface, scuttled the vessels that could not land on the surface, and ordered his fastest ships to alert the Tau Empire. It was several Tau years before reinforcements could arrive, and during that time the fleet's Fire Warriors learned to work together with the primitive Kroot, with battlefield tactics becoming increasingly integrated. When reinforcements finally arrived to destroy the Orks in that system, the Fire Warriors pledged to help liberate the Kroot's worlds from the Orks, a process that lasted for many more years and resulted in the incorporation of the Kroot into the fledgling Tau Empire.

After Pech was freed from Ork influence, the Kroot mercenaries who had escaped the war advocated a return to the time before the incursion. However, those who had fought the Orks on the Kroot's worlds did not wish to rebuild a society which had led them to war, but ill-prepared them for it. Led by the legendary shaper Anghkor Prok, these Kroot wanted to revert further, to a point before the first Ork Rok had landed on Pech. A compromise was reached, with the traditional ways respected on Pech and the other Kroot worlds, while Kindreds travelled to serve as mercenaries to the Tau and other races, returning periodically to pass on newly-acquired genetic material to future generations.

In the 41st millennium, Pech is a wild and untamed world; the hive cities reclaimed by the forest. Contact between the Kroot and the Imperium was first made during the Damocles Gulf Crusade, with the Kroot heavily damaging an Imperial Guard regiment before they were reinforced by the Scythes of the Emperor. Later contact between the Imperium and the Kroot has been made, with several worlds bordering Tau space recruiting Kroot mercenary forces to supplement their own.

Society

Kroot society is divided into tribes, known as Kindreds. Each Kindred is an extended family group of Kroot and is led by a Shaper, one Kroot with an intuitive understanding of the DNA absorption process all Kroot possess, and responsible for guiding the evolution of their Kindred. The Shaper, upon identifying a beneficial genetic trait, will instruct his Kindred to hunt and consume that animal, and then control the breeding of the Kindred to ensure that the offspring are born with the selected trait. Often, Kindreds will band together, and the Shapers will form a Council, of which the most influential Kindred's Shaper will be made leader of the group. On rare occasions, a Chief will unite a large number of Kindreds underneath him.

Kroot dwell in warm, temperate conditions on the worlds they inhabit, and construct large tree houses from animal hides, bound together by regurgitated dead wood. Some Kindreds reside in the ruins of the hive cities. There has been no obvious industry on Pech since the coming of the Orks, but Tau research teams have detected strange energy emissions, emanating from a collection of hills near their base.

The consumption of flesh is one of the key tenets of Kroot spirituality, as it is believed that the consumption of prey imparts the 'spirit' of the prey to the Kroot, which is then passed on to the Kroot's children. This is the average Kroot's understanding of their rapid evolution, with 'spirit' as a substitute for 'genetic trait'. As a part of this, the Kroot believe that when a warrior dies, his spirit should be kept safe by the Kindred. They will consider it their responsibility to consume the bodies of their dead foes, along with their own fallen and elders.

Warfare

The most common venue in which the Kroot are encountered are the Tau Hunter Cadres, where they serve as auxiliaries. They are the most common non-Tau in the Tau military, and are an almost completely self-sufficient addition to any Cadre. Kroot Kindreds are naturally skilled at field craft and infiltration, and are often used as scouts.

However, while the treaty which resulted in the inclusion of the Kroot into the Tau Empire, one of its conditions was that not all Kroot mercenaries were to be seconded to the Hunter Cadres, as to do so would result in a stagnation of Kroot evolution. Mercenary armies are often dispatched from the Kroot worlds, and fight alongside many forces in the local region of the galaxy, including but not limited to the Imperial Guard, the Eldar, and even the Orks.

As the less-developed section of the Kroot brain is also the section responsible for ingenuity and imagination, Kroot tactics are relatively stagnant. Their style of warfare is dependent on their skill and viciousness in close combat, drawn from their fast reflexes and strong musculature. Their skills lie in tracking and guerrilla warfare, and the Kroot Kindreds are reliant on technologically advanced employers to supply and equip them in sieges and drawn-out campaigns.

(Taken from the old character sheet for Anghkor Prok http://www.cygnusx1.info/tau/anghkor_prok.pdf)

Anghkor Prok - The Great Uniter

Anghkor Prok was a Kroot chief and holy man under whom the Kroot
kindreds of Pech united in their struggle against the Orks. After
refusing to give way to a larger Kroot at a feast table, he was given the
name Anghkor Prok, a term used to describe a bull Krootox sitting
intractably on its haunches. It was a name he would live up to
throughout his life. Celebrated for his ferocity in battle, Anghkor Prok
came to be recognised among his kindred as a visionary leader
committed to preserving traditions and values of the Kroot’s way of life.

Even as a youth, Anghkor Prok was a warrior of repute, and when the
Orks invaded Pech, the Kroot home world, the kindreds were almost
wiped out by the warlike Greenskins. More and more kindred were
destroyed by the Orks in brutal raids on their homelands, until less than
50,000 Kroot were left alive on Pech. In one such attack, the supreme
Ork Warlord, Dregruk Grimtooth, encircled the winter camp of Anghkor
Prok’s kindred. At dawn, the Orks attacked the encampment and within
minutes hundreds of Kroot were dead, many of them cut down by Ork
choppas as they crossed a frozen river. Anghkor Prok would only speak
of this massacre in his later years, where he talked of mothers chopped
down with their infants, warriors and young killed as they fled with their
families. Barely a handful of Kroot escaped the killing and, as they left
their dead behind in the snow, Anghkor Prok vowed he would have his
revenge.

Thus the stage was set for a bitter war between Anghkor Prok and
Dregruk’s Orks. He orchestrated the most successful guerrilla war
against the Orks ever fought by a Kroot leader, engaging in deadly
hit-and-run attacks throughout the rest of the winter. So successful was
he that the Orks were forced to construct forts throughout the heart of
Kroot territory, stretching from the Kamyon Mountains in the east to the
highland forests in the west, Anghkor Prok’s courage was legendary
and his reputation soon spread to the other kindreds. Widely respected
for his bravery and insight, he was declared Chief of the Kroot kindreds;
the last, best hope for the race

As three columns of Ork warriors moved to surround Anghkor Prok, he
summoned the allied kindreds to his camp on Kaikown Mountain. There
he led them in ritual feasting, offering prayers to the Great Ancestor
Spirits, and slashing his arms a hundred times as a sign of sacrifice.
During this ceremony, he was granted a vision in which he saw Orks
falling into his camp like Kroothawk falling from the sky. Inspired by this
vision, Anghkor Prok set out for battle with 5,000 warriors, surprising
Dregruk’s troops and forcing them to retreat at the Battle of the Ice
Fields. To celebrate this victory, the Kroot moved their camp to the
Valley of the River, where they were joined by 9,000 more Kroot who
had left their lands to follow Anghkor Prok. Here, they were attacked by
Orks under the impetuous Warboss Rotfang, whose badly outnumbered
Stormboyz first rushed the encampment, as if in fulfilment of Anghkor
Prok’s vision, then made a stand on a nearby ridge, where they were
utterly destroyed.

Following the victory, some Kroot Kindreds took refuge back at Kaikown
Mountain, but Anghkor Prok remained to battle Dregruk. The Warlord’s
outrage at this defeat brought thousands more Orks to the area, and
over the next year they relentlessly pursued the Kroot throughout the
highland forests. But Anghkor Prok remained defiantly elusive.

Many years of fruitless war followed, with neither side able to gain a
clear advantage until news reached Anghkor Prok of the return of the
exiles, those Kroot who had left Pech many years before on their war
spheres to ply their trade as mercenaries. Anghkor Prok was elated,
believing that this event promised to rid Pech of Orks and restore the
Kroot way of life. Sending word to the newly arrived Kroot, he marched
at the head of ten thousand warriors to the Plain of Bones where
Dregruk had his camp.

Dregruk’s army had also suffered in the intervening years. Cut off from
reinforcements, his army had dwindled to a fraction of its former size.
The Kroot’s consumption of dead Orks prevented their numbers from
being replenished by natural means, and the lack of raw materials on
Pech had limited the war machines he could construct. The Kroot fell
upon his army from two directions and the battle was fierce, lasting
nearly a full day. Neither side was willing to give or ask for quarter, but
in the end, the Orks were defeated and their flesh consumed in a feast
of celebration.

Anghkor Prok led his kindred for a further ninety years, winning many
battles and, famously, swearing allegiance to the Tau empire at the
sacred Oathstone before falling in battle against Ork pirates. His body
was buried on the slopes of Mount Kaikown, where a carved Jagga tree
marks his grave. Anghkor Prok is still venerated among the Kroot, not
only as an inspirational leader and fearless warrior, but also as a Kroot
whose faith in their way of life gave him prophetic insight and lent
special power to his spirit.

Well, that's all I got for now.

Now THATS a start! Thank's shaper. Now that we got the basics, we should work on the more important stuff.

Now, we know that they live in tribes, alot like native americans actually. Some live in the ruins of their old cities, and some even may live on the worlds they once ruled over. On the GW site, they have a tutorial on how to make krooty huts, although not so much on what their hive cities looked like.

We may need an artist... >_>

Well, in my understanding "peaceful kroot" or kroot who work for TAU live in tribes/kindreds. However the mercenaries usually live in "bands" that are much more "nomadic" then their "peaceful brothers". hey bearly visit pech and act more like "rouge traders" on a slightly bigger scale.

Thats my opinion anyway.

P.S. What I want from this project ->
- Good easy going language that would allow to create good names for bands and characters.
- Terrain projects and modeling projects
- Attract attention to this board so we could get a MOD and few project started so we would have more people ^_^.

This can be done! and maybe even our own forum at somepoint for the proj! *looks at wargamer.* :P

ANYWAY... my idea for Kroot in society(IE: women, children and non mercs) is basically alot like Native American culture. Kroot living on the plains live in movable huts and migrate along with a herd animal(equivilant of buffalo) as their major food source.

while the ones in the forest have a much more stable life, with a plentiful food source of berries/fruits and small woodland creatures.

The ones living in the mountain/higher regions have the ability to grow crops and hunt more plentiful animals.

And the ones in coastal areas can fish for their food source.

Well, main source of fluff is a section in TAU codex.

Also one thing should be kept in mind. Kroot are NOT primitive, their level of technology is level of Orkks. Simply because kroot ate some of Orkks and their technicians and absorbed it. They were able to recreate it. (See the wiki fluff)

After the war with Orkks many Kroot decided not to use interstellar technologies and return to more "natural ways".
Though I assume they never did. Its kind of like giving up an indoor pluming just because you think its evil... They also use technology that was provide by TAU.

On a cultural part I think you are right, they are close to "herders". I am not sure whether they just move from field to field or live more "settle" life.
After the war was over, Pech was ruined. It is I suppose in the stage of recovery. There are a lot less kroot then it was before the war. Thus I doubt that kroot really need growing vegetables. They can just move from place to place.
Since Many kroot are leaving the planet for a the mercenary life, I would think that their is lots of "free space" on Pech and kroot do not really need to grow crops. They would live like "herders" and grow sme sort of animal. I don't know what meal the hound can make, and I think, kroot don't eat krootox as they "respect them" I guess.
Another possibility is Knorlock. Knorlock is pretty big and it evolved far away from kroot branch. Though the diet of Knorlock is probably hardly vegetarian. Then again who knows? ^_^

For "industry". Well I think we (kroot) are very close to orkks. What I mean is that they have "some work shops" or something that would make guns, tools and "war spheres" . Few kroot "big mekks" would manufacture and sell that in their work shops like orkks do.

Another thing that would probably be devolved relatively good is trading. Since kroot do work for others, they probably trade with lot of races.

P.S. My favorite aspect of kroot of course are mercenaries. ^_^

Walk Tall everyone!!!!!

Most kroot live in forests where they build their house out of regurgetated wood pulp and build these communities in the trees, kind of like the wookiees. Kroot are living in a odd period. They live like primatives but have the capabilities to build Warshperes and guns along with farming equipment. Pech has a fair population with a few small civic centers seeing how the old ways of hive cities almost lead to their extinction.

Also remember the time since the kroot were almost wiped out has been a fair amount of time. This is evident because alot of Hunter Cadres incorperate kroot units. Also they are the main auxillary of the Tau Empire

Kroot trade fighting skill for other weapons and for the chance to get genetic material.

Kroot are exelent at evolving on the run allowing them to change their reperatory system and physical characteristics in a matter of one or two generations. There have been reports of kroot arriving on a world and then leaving being able to breathe the toxic atmosphere, on ice worlds the kroot leave with a think fur like coat and deposits of fat for insulation. Also the physical characteristics of Kroot are very vaired. There are reports of seven foot tall kroot and five. Some with six fingers and three. Their coloration also varies depending on the kindred and enviroment.

In my opinion, their herd creature is probably a strain of kroot like the hound or knarloc, but it is one of the ones mentioned in the wiki fluff that is "killed on sight". In fact, I almost imagine something similar to the krootox but with less muscle.

As far as society goes and the way that each role is played, i.e. women, children, and men, I see them as a cross between Native American, Zulu, and Spartan cultures. What I mean by this is that they move in tribes, or kindred, that are nomadic now after the Ork wars. They are very fast and agile warriors setting up traps to cut off their prey. Finally, that all members of Kroot society are trained in warfare. Considering that Kroot are descendant of avian DNA, there would be no mammary glands, and also there would be no exposed genitalia. In other words, except for pheromone communication there would be little visible difference in the genders. Thus, a warband could consist of a mixture of males and females and we would never know.

I see Kroot now as living in nomadic huts that are quickly assembled and taken down, much like the Plains Indians or the Mongols. As for the ancient hive cities, I picture the cliff dwellings of the Pueblo Indians personally. Also, each of the great hive cities (for some reason I want to say that there were five) could have been completely different. There could have been one like Rome, one like Tikal (Mayan city), or who knows what else. The truth is, so many Kroot were killed by the Orks that really that entire culture was lost and all that is left is the culture of Anghkor Prok and his tribe. In other words, for all we know there could have been as many different Kroot cultures and religions as we have in real life on Earth, but it as eliminated to one by the mass genocide by the Orks.

We do know, however, that the Kroot travel in space craft called Warspheres and that these are based off of DNA imprinted Ork technology (why couldn't we have eaten a smarter race?). We also know that Orks had come to Pech before the great war, so this means that the knowledge to create the warspheres existed before the war. That means that the only surviving members of the old Kroot culture who might be different from Prok, were the mercenaries.

Oh, and a little side note, the Master Shaper is the leader of a mercenary warband, and is the one who actually goes about signing contracts and collecting payment. In other words, he is the strongest Kroot of the warband and their front man.

The role of the Shaper. The Shaper is viewed as a leader of the tribe, or kindred, and is responsible for overseeing the development of the kindred. He is also viewed as a spiritual leader due to his minor psyker (shamanic) powers. The true role of a Shaper though, is to advise his kindred on what to eat, and then selectively tell which individuals to mate in order to achieve the desired trait in the smallest amount of time. Thus, by this we can see a few things. The first is that the Shaper has the final say in anything and thus it is likely that Kroot culture is a Patriarchal society, though this is simply based off of the fact that Prok was male. Also we see that there is no such thing as marriage since the Shaper commands certain members to mate

The best milestone IMO is Agnor Prokrok. He is the symbol of end of the War on Pech. I doubt the Pech became overpopulated and prevent Kroot from being Herders. Especialy with so many kroot leavening Pech as Mercenaries or part of the TAU empire, I think we can safely say that Pech is quite wild.

I disagree. He might be "the front man". But I think he is the most experienced not necessarily the strongest. The war band with a dumb Master Shaper would quickly become deformed without guidance of their Master Shaper. I think

Master shaper is the one that can control his ability to mutate better then others. He is also probably knows many languages to communicate with the potential costumers. He might be the strongest but thats isn't his KEY skill.

Well, again thats might be true on the Pech, where the social structure exists. On the Mercenary band. I can't really say. Since they travel a lot and might find culture of other races better then their own.
Though it is possible that kroot wouldn't have a concept of marriage to begin with and thought do not look at it the way we do.

Though the "Mark of the favorite Child" suggest that the concept of family DOES exists.

We do know, however, that the Kroot travel in space craft called Warspheres and that these are based off of DNA imprinted Ork technology (why couldn't we have eaten a smarter race?)
Well, we are not all that smart. My best guess would be that we ate lot of races. The orkks were the only one that we could absorb and learn.

Default Re: Kroot Group History/Fluff Writing Thread!

Sorry, I worded my argument incorrectly. When I said that the Master Shaper was the strongest, I didn't mean just physically strong. I meant he was probably the strongest, smartest, and craftiest Kroot. Also, just because something is called a "child" doesn't necessarily mean that it's a concept of family. Now, had it said "favoured son" or something then that could be family, but child is an age group. Just like the words teenager, adult, and senior citizen do not evoke feelings of a family, child is just another age group. Also, we know that the Kroot have some form of ancestor worship, so anyone living would be a "child" to the ancestors. Just putting out a counter argument and playing a little Devil's advocate.

As far as language goes, Anghkor Prok we know means "Sitting Male Krootox", i.e. Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull was a chief of the Lakota Sioux, specifically the Hunkpapa Lakota. Thus, we should probably base the language off of either Sioux or another Plains Indian language. Possibly even southwestern like the Pueblo. That's just my opinion. We could just come up with random sounds and assign them meaning but I think basing it off of an existing language would be easier. It would be especially easy if anyone already spoke one of the aforementioned languages.
