Default Hey everybody. (I'm so ashamed)

Hey everyone, I'm new.

I hail from the wide world of the B&C, where I use the same name, for any who care. I use the B&C because I play Thousand Sons. A friend got me into 40K, and urged that I play Thousand Sons, so I did. Now, almost 2 years later, I'm thinking about the future. Specifically, I've been thinking about other armies that might interest me. Being that I'm a college student, and lack....oh-what's-the-word?...oh yeah....money, any new army that I start won't be any time soon. Still, I've been planning and thinking and reading the codices, and, other than Loyalist marines, Tau seem like a great army. I love the vague japanese/anime-ish influence, and I love their firepower most of all. I'm looking to move from an army that's supposed to be shooty to one that's actually shooty (while if I do another marine army, it'll definitely be cc-based). I've already read the great "Know yourself" post, so now I have some questions.

1) Should I post this question here, or is this strictly for introductions?
2) Why are Tau good? Are they as stationary a shooty army as IG? They don't look to be, but I don't want to go from a slow-as-molasses army to one that doesn't move at all (IG, IW, etc.). I know that they don't do CC, I just don't want to be stuck in my deployment zone firing away (though seeing all those darned IG drop would be fantastic). I just basically want to know if Tau are the race for me. Sorry for being vague, and I know that you guys probably have to do this for all the newbs, like we do, I just couldn't find another post like this one in the introductions. "Know Yourself" is great for explaining each unit, but I'm looking for more of a pro/con list. Thanks.

Again, please let me know if this is in the wrong place, and I'll go repost it in the Tau section, unless a mod will be so kind as to move it for me, though I'd be happy to do it myself.

PS I've already read the rules, and have begun living them.

++Edit: Sorry, I guess I need to look and see, instead of just look. I found other posts about army lists, for example, and those answer some questions, but I would still like a sort of general "what's good and bad about Tau" kind of response. After all the time I spend telling other new players to research and make a list for critique, look at what I come and do. Sheesh. Sorry, guys and gals.++

Welcome to the tau online forums and FT sent this to me so

Tau

Advantages
- one of the best shooting armies ever
- Very good shooty basic trooper
- ability of suits to fire and two units simutanous.

Disadvantages
- POOR in combat
- Tends to be fairly small armies
- Lack of dedicated assault troops (Kroot are specialist assault troops)

By "specilist" we mean that Kroot are good at getting rid of Orks, Guardsmen and Hormagaunts and naff all else.

Tau can be an immesly mobile force, if played with skill <less then fond memories of chasing a devilfish round the map, trying to get it into proximety of my Powa Klaw>

As previously said, Tau can be a very mobile army, but these armies require a lot of skill and practice to use. And even with Tau trying to sit and outshoot IG is asking for trouble.

Welcome, I'm FT btw ...
I'm glad you've already read the rules and if you have any more queries as to where to post etc, please feel free to pm me... If your gonna collect a cc based army, then World Eaters are one of the best, but with the new SM codex, they can be quite deadly as well...

Well thanks, guys. *feels so welcomed* ;D

I don't think I'll regret my decision, even if I haven't done anything about it yet. :P

One question, though, is that it seems that many of the tactics include something like "if you're facing x, bring lots of y." Does that mean that it's not possible to have well-rounded all-comers Tau list? Must the list be re-specialized for every battle? Or is that just a guideline, for if you're playing a regular opponent, or something? I'm used to playing Thousand Sons, where there are about 3 possible choices you can take from the Codex, so it could be that I'm just a little daunted by having so much openness. Thanks again.

You cna create a generalised list yes and this is actively encourged if your doing a tourney since you'll need the balance so that you'll have a couple of units that can do anything you need to. If your facing regular opponents and you know their army inside out, then you can plan your next purchase to take advantages of their weaknesses. I hope this makes any sense at all to you.
