Default Introduction and Force org question

Hi all,
Joined a couple of days ago and I just want to say, I love this site. I've never joined any kind of forum before this one but I had to after reading through the various articles they have and the way the forum is organized. I just recently got into table top wargaming having made the shift from hardcore videogamer. I play Tau and Tyranid but like the Tau more. (way more).

Anyway, just wanted to say hey and give the mad props to the people that keep this site running.

I do have one question with regards to force organization. I only have the rules book that comes with the battle for macragge so it doesn't go into what percentages of what type of troop you need. (it's a fairly thin book). I want to know this stuff so I can start building competive tournament armies that are legal and fair (no powergaming cheese, etc.) For example, I hear things like "you need 40% of all points spent on troops" or something like that. Can anyone help me? I'd like to design a 1000pt force. And if this is the wrong place for this kind of question I'll repost in the appropriate board.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome. I can't answer your question, but ask around. I'm sure Wargamer can answer that. ;D

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

I think you have this mixed up a little bit. There aren't any restrictions on how many points can be spent on what units, you just have to have the mandatory stuff in your army, and you're free to use whatever you want, albeit it's still in the points limit for the entire game, and it follows the force organization chart. And this is why Warhammer 40,000 is such a fun game; you just have so many opportunities to customize your army. It can be anywhere from making your own colour scheme, to making your list completely out of the ordinary.

As for what you were thinking were restrictions, I believe are actually just recommendations for point spending in tournament lists. A lot of people find certain percentages of units work best in a tournament, as it can really put a major emphasis on what type of armies win battles, rather then just, "Oh, this unit is good against that". However, it is not inforced. You're free for taking whatever you want into any battle, as long as you have the mandatory units; one HQ, and two Troops, and they follow the force organization chart.

Force Organization Chart listings can be found in the rulebook that you have. Not too sure on what page they are in the Macragge Rulebook, but the index is a start. All it does is tell you the minimum, and maximum amount of units you can take, there isn't a thing about percentages, although I'm sure you could determine what percentages your units are.

Welcome to the forums!

Hey all,
Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure the only restrictions were in the force org chart, 1 HQ, 2 Troops. My friends are either confused or are talking about recomendations. Thanks ToastMaster.

See if you can get a standard rulebook; not just the compressed version from battle for maccarage. If you get the standard rule book it would probably clear questions up for you. It is a tad pricy though (especially for me since I dont have a job )

Welcome to TO anyway!
