Default 400 Point ~ Guard w/ Grey Knights

I was browsing the Codex rack at my LGS today and found myself entranced by the Imperial Guard and the Daemonhunters. With out haste I bought the Codex and set about building a useable Combat Patrol army. Let me state that I don’t own any Imperial Guard or Daemonhunter units, I’m just giving them both a whirl to see if I like them (because I have grown to hate my Eldar army, they’re too specialized for my tastes) before I buy any thing else.

I intend to use this army against my friend’s Tau army and am looking for some help in making the list all it can be. Let me state that the Platoon structure of IG confuses me, so I apologize if I have majorly screwed up the list ?

Troops ~ 310

Platoon 1
Junior Officer (Laspistol, Close Combat Weapon)
Guardsmen (Lasguns)

Infantry Squad 1
Sergeant w/ Shotgun

Infantry Squad 2
Sergeant w/ Shotgun

Grey Knights
4 Grey Knights
1 Grey Knight Justicar

Fast Attack ~ 90
Sentinel
Mars Pattern
Sentinel
Mars Pattern

TOTAL ~ 400

Let’s see. The basic theme of the army is, shoot first and shoot furthest. My Guardsmen are there mostly for support and to guard my Sentinels. I didn’t spend any points upgrading the Guardsmen or the Junior Officer because, if all goes to plan, they won’t need anything but the barest bones equipment. I will use the Grey Knights as my main attack force, which will close in and enter Close Combat with my friend’s Fire Warriors and/or destroy any other problem units. .

Anyways, that’s my list. Thanks in advance for your help!

Looks fairly good for a small list. I'm assuming this is combat patrol?

I like the look of the Guard list, even though I have no clue about Guard. But I wouldn't be too dependent on your Grey Knights, as you get very very little of them and they have no Anti-tank support whatsoever until you put DNoughts or LRaiders in.

Personally, when you move up to the bigger battles I would use your guard for your static Anti-tank while using your Grey Knights as mobile fire support and CC. Storm Bolters and Nemesis Force Weapon for the win!

Regards,

Dante

How do you plan to use your Guard?
Sit back and shoot as distractions? Give the Sergeants Lasguns as they double the range and have the same Str and AP (ie. none).
Tie up enemy forces in CC? Give the Command Squad all CCW and Laspistols. Should actually be able to do something at this points level.

The main strength of the Guard is in Heavy Weapons or Special Weapons. While a Heavy Bolter could be really useful (and look good!), I understand that you don't have enough points to spare. If you decide to change your list around though and end up with a few spare points, I would recommend a flamer (which costs the same as a Guardsman and will do a lot more damage).

As for Grey Knights, I think they could be quite fun to use in such a low points game. They will make nice Shock Troops, but are likely to be the main target for the enemy (besides Sentinels). Use terrain and against Tau, make sure you minimise the number of shots they can get against you. Tau aren't too bad at shooting and are quite capable of taking down a minimal squad if they are able to concentrate fire. Maybe even send a Guard squad to force Target Priority checks to help shield the Knights, as Tau don't have great Leadership...
