Default Landraider heavy greyknight tactics and advice

i was playing a casual 1,000 point game with a spacemarine friend of mine who has fallen inlove with his pred's and chaplain lead assault squad. i usually have no problem with his assault squad, thanks to my storm bolters, but his tanks with their shiny AV13 always pointed at the one or two dread i take as anti-tank just blow away my greyknights. usually resulting in a tie, or small loss for me.
so, just to be silly i took two landraiders and 11 greyknights with a psicannon totting grandmaster in a 1,000 point game and completely decimated. byt staying behind the laindraiders and denying LOS to anything than what iw as shooting at i lost two grey knights and slaughtered everything he had by turn 6. the next game he knew it was coming and loaded up with lascannons, but i was still able to pull a tie with both landraiders gone at turn 1 by using them as cover.

so as it is, im hooked on this strategy. does anyone else use LR heavy lists to any great affect? also, my other regular opponent is an eldar player, who has me cringing, as they can get around the wall rather fastly.

i have a plan that you may be interested in........

for a little while now i have been running a dark angels list with 3 land raiders and 12 terminators just to get the feel of having such a small army (and to stop my GK win streak getting tarnished )

i will soon be moving on to this list:

HQ - Brother Captain - 81pts
- psychic hood

Elites - Inquisitor - 287pts
- 2 mystic henchmen
- land raider transport

Elites - Inquisitor - 282pts
- 1 mystic henchmen
- targetter
- land raider transport

Troops - 5 stormtroopers - 50pts

Troops - 5 stormtroopers - 50pts

heavy support - GK land raider - 255pts

heavy support - GK land raider crusader - 265pts

heavy support - GK land raider crusader - 265pts

yep, i'm aiming for the 5 land raider list ^-^

even against anti-tank armies like tau, eldar/dark eldar or armies that stock up on lascannons - land raider are seriously hard to destroy and you need luck to do anything to them.

dont worry too much about the speed of the eldar, if they move over 12" they cant shoot their shiny bright lances at you and if they move at all, their transported infantry wont be charging you any time soon.

that said it is a very hard list to play with. you may need luck to destroy a land raider but leaving one in front of 9 broadsides is asking for trouble :P make sure that you can get as many "hull down" rolls as possible.

i see how 5 landraiders would be hard to put down.... but thats 1,250+ points of armored wall.... which is nice and all, but whats doing the killing?
two inquisitors, ten stock ST's and a bro cap. are not going to be able to do diddly squat.

that armylist has:

1 stormbolter
3 lasguns (mystics)
(the =][= are unarmed)
10 hellguns
6 twin linked lascannons
3 twin linked heavy bolters
2 twin linked assault cannons
2 multi-meltas
2 pairs of hurricane bolters

never forget the ammount of fire support you get from a land raider. with that much firepower aimed at your opponents anti-tank elements, you should find that by turn 3/4 you will have lost 1 or 2 raiders but they will be completely unable to hurt them anymore >

and dont forget that the only non-scoring unit in the entire list is the brother captain. that means that as long as the inquisitors can keep their mystics alive and i dont lose 3 stormtroopers in each squad that i have 9 scoring units (of which 4 of them i couldnt care less about )

but like i said - it is not an easy list to use.

but i'm just a nut for land raiders at the minute. i'd advise a pure GK list to have 2 land raiders and lots of terminators with psycannons. it allows you to react to any opponent you may face.

if you let me know what models you have, i will try to come up with a list for you (to your specifications)

Actually the 2 land raiders for the inqs wont be scoring as there transports. Only in codex space marines does it stay land raiders always count as scoring. Transports dont. Looks an interesting list, have you had chance to use it?

Heya,

The DH codex is aged and full of gaping holes for rules, but the new SM codex is not the only one that has scoring dedicated land raiders. The new chaos codex does this as well. If GW ever gets around to updating the DH codex beyond it's 4th reprint, or just redo the thing completely (which I would greatly appreciate, they put very little thought into this codex and force in general as it's clear they just wanted you to add them to other armies, and give fans a chance to play `pure' forces that are essentially not nearly as competitive or complete as other codicies), then it's likely they'll fix the holes for rules, like the Land Raider rule. Essentially though the game is moving towards big transports like the Raider to always be scoring. But as it stands, letter of the rule is a problem for the DH codex with no supporting FAQ on the subject. It will come down to the event/tourney rules (and many of them you may find that they support Raiders scoring, not all judges/rules at tournies follow GW written rules to the letter, lots of them look at what is going on in the codices and make calls on it, this is a good example of one that would be great to bring to their attention before starting the event).

Cheers,
