Hmm, didn't realize it was that cheap to make.
I'd seen a few made over the years. One was a carrying case, where the barrel tips pulled straight out and it was one long "shoe box". Said it took him "months", and to me it was oversized. Cool, but not for me. Seen people use milled alluminimum, CAD designed, air-soft, etc., really complex builds, works of art really.
This was a one-off, as a prop for an event two weeks away, and without having any clear "future" for it, didn't want to invest too much $$ or time into it. I knew I could pull off the "that's really cool" looking prop, and more importantly, didn't want to freak out should someone knock it over or drop it. So a cheap, light chunk of wood, and my artsy-fartsy labor got it done.
By not competing with DARPA, not trying to fool anyone that it was a "real" concept weapon... sometimes quick-and-dirty is good enough.
