I don't like your fire teams idea, guard just aren't tough enough to do be effective at that unit size.
I had it more in mind for cityfights than normal open-board battles, where cover is everywhere.

But seriously, a Guardsman, I'm willing to bet, could a) outshoot me, b) give me the beating of my life, and c) shove more squad-based tactics down my throat than I'd ever care to digest. Guard are hard, hard men. Whether or not GW's inconsistent, Marine-worshipping fluff keeps with that, mkay?

I doubt 5 lasguns on their own could ever be of much use though.

Dang I hope they don't recut the Cadian boxes because I've stumbled across a cool secret:
If you have an autocannon (or lascannon or heavy bolter) team on a large base then you have enough parts to give 1 guardman in a squad a missile launcher and 1 a missile in his off-hand
so I can use my autocannons as fire support teams and still have missile launchers in my infantry squads
Valk sounds awesome
Imagine this:
Guard officer to chaos termie lord
GO: I can kill you with three words and a comma
CTL: how, you have no weapons and you aren't a psyker
GO: Fleet, open fire
CTL: A Fleet Officer DAAAAAAAAAMM ZAPPP
(F)GO: I said that I could kill you with three words and a comma

Which is why a smart commander doesn't expect five lasgunners to do everything by themselves.  The Imperial Guard is a combined arms force.  It's parts are supposed to work in unison to achieve their goals.

1) IG can do this two ways.  In the macharian crusade rules, you can have 'advanced tactics' where grenadiers and storm troopers can switch hellguns for bolters +10 points a unit, and can use combat squads.

2) Cities of Death (It might have been the old Cityfight, not sure) IG automatically get this ability.

And you are missing the big picture.  It's not 5 lasguns per unit.  It's one squad with a special (melta or plasma, and in cityfight, flamers would be useful too) and the other with a heavy weapon, to cover the advancing unit.  Very effective.

And Rmyr, what do you mean fleet and fire?  Guard can't fleet, and if you run, you can't shoot... right?

It was the old Cityfight book.  One of the best supplements put out by GW in my opinion.  I still use it today.

I laugh at Rmy's post and I lauged again at this. By fleet he means the fleet of ships that are orbiting the planet. Fleet Officers can call down orbital strikes.
