In the days of Twitter and 140 character complete thoughts, I thought I would be cool to have a competition for a short story written in 2000 characters (i.e. in your signature) or less.

Just a thought.

I support this idea! ;D
Seconded.

You know, that would be really cool.  Mainly because I thought of a great idea for a 40K short story, and TOGSSC was too long as a minimum. ;D  I mean, 3000 words is a lot so it kinda discourages people from making stories and joining.  If there was a Sig or short story comp, there might be more interest.

3000 words is suprisingly quick to write. I did it in 4 days. taking my sweet time too.

I know that it can be fast, just some ideas fit better as short stories rather than 3000-10000 words.  Yes, I know that those are still short stories, but it takes some time to write what, 8+ pages?

6-7 pages yes.

Well it's a matter of preference, really. the small the word count the harder it is to have a good intro, development and conclusion for your story, since you have ot compress everything.

Plus last winter we did gave a 1000 words competition.

Well, the trick with character limits isn't the "ease" of how quick it it to write.  Instead, it's challenging to try to fit enough information into a character limit.  So, yeah, we could all fill 2000 characters (one sig full) in a matter of minutes.  But would it be a cohesive, complete and engaging story?  Aye, there's the rub.

I was thinking about a "tiny model painting competition". Paint a model that is smaller than X" by X" or simply small in scale, e.g. Battlefleet Gothic ships, Epic models (single model, like a tank), a single squig, grot, or even snotling, servo-skull, etc.

Another category (which would probably be more feasible) was a Jump Infantry Competition. Any model with the Jump Infantry special rules (no Monstrous Creatures or special characters).

This isn't a sugestion for a competition but do you think it might be easier if the Contests have a submission form to fill in which is automatically posted on a certain date with polls, images etc?

I don't know how realistic that is, to be honest. I'm sure that would be a hell of a lot of coding for FT to do...

I don't think He'd want any more scripting to (I've allready given him more file formats to have the army lists convert to :P)
The auto-post would be the only hard part of this though. Maybe a submission form that auto creates a post containing their entry. In the end It probably won't help in the overall scheme of things.

As another sugestion, could we have the army contest for both 40K and WHFB?

The chap in this post painted some models for some rather interesting painting competitions.  In that post he mentions an "Anything Orange" competition and a "Some Sort of Rocket" competition.

Is there any chance of having some competitions along these lines?  Something that isn't just "an HQ choice" or "any Tau model" but something a little more open and different to the traditional competitions?

Suggestions could include:

  • Anything (insert colour)
  • Some kind of gun
  • Some kind of sword (and the chap who enters a Sword-class Escort from BFG getting laughs from everyone)
  • Some kind of animal or beast

I'm sure there are plenty of other things like this that people could come up with.

What masked thespian says is good!

At the moment competitions are a bit 'the same' and repetetive. Some more open contests using a common theme like thespian said are perfect, and by common theme I don't mean fast attack  :-[
