Hive Fleet Hekatonkheires - Finished Stuff
    « on: December 03, 2007, 05:26:20 AM »
This is just to show off my color scheme.  The first two pictures are more accurate color-wise, I was having difficulty lighting the shot in the last three.  I'm pretty pleased with my first attempt ever at putting together and painting models...

You can see the inspiration & paint details of my color scheme here:

Interesting colors. I like the metallic gold and the purple. It should be out of place, but it doesn't look it.

The gold and shiny purple kinda makes the carnifex look like it was made from living metal. The purple just screams halo covenant to me!

I discussed my color scheme here: http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=57428.0
If you check out that thread, you can see a few of the pictures I used as inspiration for the color scheme.  Basically, I got the idea for the colors off real life insects.  I've seen a lot of insects where their carapace chitin was in fact metallic, even though that's not a trait you tend to see on many people's interpretation of Tyranids.

Lots of Damselfly's and Dragonfly's have bright metallic colors on them; so the orange ribbed areas I wanted came from seeing a real life Dragonfly that had brilliant orange, red, and gold coloring on it.  The purple, I was inspired to use having seen a bright metallic blue Damselfly.  The carapace itself on my 'fex was inspired by a Hornet-like look.  I've not seen any bee, yellow jackets, or hornets with an actual metallic gold in their chitin, but it fit with the look of the model as I was envisioning it, so I thought it would work.

Great color scheme. All logic says that combining those colors should produce terrible results and yet you pull it off. :D

Peculiar name for a hive fleet (they're normally named after great and terrible mythical beasts), but the colour scheme certainly stands out.  I don't like the gold, but the purple is lovely.

When all was finished, the battlefield was a smoking crater. UDC, Valoran, US Army, Tau, the Nazis, a random pirate ship, and a bunch of ninjas, all were enemies to the Vulture. All were turned into scrap metal. Or plastic. Depends which game system you play.

The 'Fex's tail caught my eye, It isn't highlighter as many 'Nid flesh I see arround.

It's more of.... Kinda dotted, or motted... But the bright colours slowly fade to black.

On the first picture, the one under the light, above the glands on the chtin I see an orange that again, goes from bright to black, I'd loved to see that kind of highlights on the chtin's edges instead of the solid gold you decided to put there.
And while its a nice colourscheme from distance.... once you start to get close it dosn't quite does it for me, Yet.... I'd welcome you with open arms to a match with those miniatures, they certainly stand out from the rest.

      Gotta love that purple XD.

Man, I wish my first models were as good as these!  Very nice work mate.  The purple is great, and the gold goes with it very well, and makes it look... I can't say.  But it demands attention.  If you need any help with army lists or an ything like that, you PM me, you hear?

I like the color scheme, though on first glance it looked... akward. Very nice though.

Aye, I know the name of the Hive Fleet is atypical.  From the Tyranid Codex, I did read what you say above about their typical naming, however, I felt a departure from normal naming conventions wasn't out of line with this name.  The text is laced with proclamations by various Imperials and Marines about how mankind may well be doomed by this - how they can not see how they can stand against this galatic consciousness directing the ever increasing frequency of assault by its numberless swarms - how humankind will simply be out-evolved - and how once they thought victory was possible but the statistics no longer bear that out and that the continuation of mankinds existence is in serious doubt now.  I would argue "Inevitable" captures the "feel" of the Tyranid threat from the flavor of the Tyranid Codex.

Also, I should have a finished Genestealer unit to post pics of soon as well.

Wow, a Tyranid pimp. Well, that's one way of getting the Genestealer Cults started, I suppose.

        Seriously though, nice work. :)

Alright, I've been persuaded, "Inevitable" doesn't fit the standard naming procedure for Tyranid Hive Fleets, so I'm re-christening my Hive Fleet: "Hekatonkheires".
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hecatonchires

It's a mouthful, but should be appropriate enough.
