Need suggestions for a Battlecry
« on: October 27, 2006, 10:54:44 AM »
I am looking for a suitable Battlecry for my Space Marines Army. The Chapter is called the Shadow Spectres.

I actually want the words: Shadow(s) and Punish (or punisher(s)) to be included in the Battlecry. I am looking for a Battlecry to go with my fluff. You can read the fluff here.

The old one was: "Strike from the shadows!"
I think it is time for a new one.

Roman or Latin will do fine too.

Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.  :)

This one has neither... but still.

Battle Cry: Due to their preferance for stealth, the Shadow Spectres do not use a battle-cry per se. Rather, the leader of an attack force will intone "illuminate them" prior to the launching of an assault.

I agree with wargamer, that they shouldn't have a "Warcry" per se, but the sarges have been known to say loud enough for the enemy to hear: "give them Punishment from the darkness" before an ll out attack comes in.

Heya,

Judging from your fluff, they wouldn't have a battle cry really. However, what's the fun in that right? So, based on their veneration of the Emperor as the father, and not as a God, and their absolute honour and loyalty to him and his cause, perhaps something Emperor related:

"Emperor vult!" (Emperor Wills It)
"Nobiscum Emperor!" (Emperor With Us)

Anyhow, they don't use your wording, but real battle crys very rarely use long words or words with lots of consonants. Battlecrys are meant to be short bursts and they typically carry a lot of vowel sounds. The word "Shadow" works here, but it doesn't have that much meaning on its own. "Punishment" is a very hard word to really make a real Cry with. But if we go to Latin:

"Shadow Ultio!" (Shadow Punishment)

Think of `Shadow Punishment' as a phrase. The Cry ends in strong vowel sounds, so it's more like what a real cry would be, with less focus on ending in consonants. The phrase represents the punishment of the enemies of the Emperor, as they hide in his shadow, and are destroyed in those very shadows.

Cheers! :)

Real men wear pink! ::)

Real men wear tights! ::)

But seriously, if they are a stealth chapter wouldn' they be as silent as a black night. But since it would be fun to have a battlecry for these guys, here is the serious one.

"The shadows know..."

It would be more like whispers to give it a more mysterious aura. An icy serpentine voice would do the trick as well.

Thanks for your replies guys,

I really like Mal's and Wargamers Battle cries. This has given me some ideas on what to go with.

I am still interested in hearing some more ideas.  :)

My main problem with Wargamer's suggestion is that the Luna Wolves used 'Illuminate them' during the Great Crusade.

I think that you need more of a motto rather than a warcry.  But I'm more here for putting it into proper Latin than anything else...

Here's some nit-picking in Mal's translations

In the first one, Imperator is probably the closest translation (lit. one who gives orders), and is seen in some of the GW Latin stuff (such as the Black Sword).
Ditto on the second one...

As for the third, 'umbra' should be used for 'shadow' if you want a full translation.  Then, 'ultio' means 'vengeance' rather than 'punishment'.  'Poena' or 'supplicium' are closer translations.  But I say that vengeance sounds better than punishment in this instance, so meh.

Edit: There is no such language as Roman; they spoke Latin.

"For the Emperor" is a good one, too mainstream though.  :P

Just some I thought of at 1 in the morn  :P

"They fear the darkness!"
"The shadow will punish them!"
"The shadows move with us!"
"The darkness is the punisher"

and so on and so forth.

How about...

Ave Punitor!

Meaning "Hail to the Punishers!"

Well, since 'punitor' is nominative singular, close, but no cigar.  It translates to:
"Hail, punisher".
Well, sentences with an imperative verb and nominative noun are nigh untranslatable, but you get the point.

Ave Punitoris!
Would be a closer translation ('Hail to the punishers!').  On that note, 'ave' is singular; as in it only works for one other person.  'Avete' would be a command for more than one person (or Marine).

Again thanks for your replies,

I see a nice selection of things I could use. I haven't decided yet which one is going to be it but there is enough to choose from.

Abael, thanks for helping translating it into Latin. Did you study it?  :)

Yep.  I've also got my handy-dandy pocket-that-doesn't-actually-fit-into-pockets Latin dictionary.
