Default Praetorian Infantry Static Fire-power Force:

Praetorian [Britannia] 1000 Point Force -- Infantry Static-Fire-power

I was taking a look at the Classic range on the GW online store before and found myself looking at the Praetorian models.

Now I've always liked these guys as they look very close to 19th Century British Empire troops.

If I do get them I will be writing my own fluff and background as I generally don't use armies with all their fluff etc already laid out.

Unoriginal I know, but their homeworld name will probably end up being called something like Britannia* :, or something along those lines.

As British forces in the 1800's obviously didn't have tanks etc I would like to limit these in the army, artillery though is a possibility. Mortars also seem to fit the bill quite well.

Doctrines

Die-Hards

Iron Discipline

Close Order Drill

Rough Rider Squadrons

I think all of these are quite fitting for what I am going for, the last option is open to any suggestions. So, any ideas?

Ok, now for the last 100 Points.

I could get a Griffon Mortar, which would fit in with the fluff quite well. With that I could also upgrade my standard to a Regimental Standard.

I could also get a Mortar Support Squad and a Regimental Standard, again this works quite well with the fluff I invision.

Now the last option is a Basilisk. It is still artillery (although not close range like the Griffon) and although not quite as fluffy as the Girffon or Mortar Squad it can deal with 3+ armour, something which the vast majority of my force can't do.

So, what do you think? both on this and the main part of the list.

Sharpshooters would be fitting for the Praetorians, as would an 'independant' heavy weapon squad (I've watched Zulu far too many times...).

That was the two I was torn between. Although I will probably go for the Heavy Weapon Platoons as Sharpshooters just isn't worth it in most cases and it will drive up my infantry squad costs too much.

I'd go with the mortar squad with the remaining points as I think the do a good job of representing light artillery, they're fun to use, and not many people take them so you'll be unique. I'd suggest taking hardened veterans as the last doctrine.

I am considering dropping one of the Infantry Squads from Platoon 1 and replacing it with an Autocannon Heavy Weapon Squad. That will boost mu Autocannon count to 8.

or their planet could be Pretoria. but on the subject of your army, i would put all the autocannons in their own hw platoon to increase the mobility of the other platoons. looks solid against most armies though.

If your playing a strongly themed army your limiting your effectiveness against Marines, like you said. Along these lines I'd go for the Basilisk. Not completely subtle but Artillery in general fits the bill and you could expand to have more Basilisks.

Call the Planet Rawkes Landing or soemthing, very original I know but it's just so cool. Like that BattRep with Praetorians and Orks I've read...

Oh, I've alway's wanted to do a Preatorian army, but I never had the cash. :P

Somewhere I once saw an army of the soldiers, painted like the old 1900's british armies, blue pants with white stripes, red coats with white cross belts, and white hats.

Further more, he did the same thing that you want to: he had heavy weapon platoons, except for the guns he got some kind of wagon wheels from the fantasy line and put 'em on, thus making them look like old style cannons and such.

Lastly, if you feel like doing the conversions, a rough rider platoon would be sweet. For insparation on your army, it wouldn't hurt to google or hit the library and find some pictures.

Praetorians would be nice... Mortars would definitely fit, especially if you converted them to look like field artillery (i've thought of doin it a couple of times myself. I seems like it wouldn't be too hard, either

Both mortars and tripod mounted heavy weapons. Anything like a basilisk would be unfluffy. If they are going to be static 19th century infantry types, they need to be supported by fixed gun emplacements.
