Default Maybe Guard?, Simple but effective?

Ok, I'm considering getting a Guard army. I did play a small Catachan army years back but that died off. I am now considering getting into Guard again.

I will use simple but hopefully effective tactics much like Guard use in the fluff.

1000 Points Hammer and Anvil

Anvil

Command Squad: 70pts
Junior Officer; Storm Bolter,
Missile Launcher.

Platoon 1: 325pts

Command Squad: 55pts
Junior Officer,
Missile Launcher.

Squad 1: 90pts
Vet Sarg; Bolter,
Autocannon,
Grenade Launcher.

Squad 2: 90pts
Vet Sarg; Bolter,
Autocannon,
Grenade Launcher.

Squad 3: 90pts
Vet Sarg; Bolter,
Autocannon,
Grenade Launcher.

3 Sentinels: 150pts
Autocannons.

Hammer

Platoon 2: 210pts

Command Squad: 60pts
Junior Officer; Power Weapon, Frag&Krak Grenades,
2 Flamers,
2 Guardsmen with Pistols and CC weapons.

Squad 1: 75pts
Vet Sarg; Blot Pistol & CC weapon,
Grenade Launcher.

Squad 2: 75pts
Vet Sarg; Frag Grenades, Pistol & CC weapon,
Grenade Launcher.

2 Sentinels: 80pts
Heavy Flamers.

Leman Russ Demolisher: 165pts
Heavy Bolter,
Sponson Heavy Flamers.

Obviously the Anvil will remain in place and shoot up the enemy. The Sentinels in the Anvil can try to tie up anything in combat that gets too close and they are mobile so can move to take objectives etc.

The Hammer will move down one flank, shooting as it goes. It will hopefully roll up the flank it goes at leaving the enemy to advance towards to Anvil or be hit by the Hammer.

So what do you think? any ideas and suggestions?.

He didn't arm is Senior Officer with anything.

Personally I think Senior Officers are pointless - they have the same Leadership as a Junior Officer, and lack the ablity of a Heroic Senior Officer. All bad in my opinion.

Hammer and Anvil would work, but the Hammer needs to be mobile and swift - something Guard Infantry is very poor at.

Maybe if you took two small platoons, and then a pair of Armoured Fist squads then it would work. Maybe.

As the Hammer isn't really close combat oriented and instead shoots on the move and at close range I think it is quick enough. Plus unless your on a huge table regular infantry movement should be enough.

If I use Armoured Fists squads I won't have much to shoot with when I get there plus units get pinned if the Chimers are destroyed and I need the whole a lot to arruive together. Not in parts like would probably happen with Fist squads.

'Personally I think Senior Officers are pointless'

I was wondering why I was 10 points over. That should be a Junior Officer with Storm Bolter.

I'll fix the list now.

'erm you do know you havent armed your officers with anything dont you'

They start with Laspistols and CC weapons.

Junior Officers are a much better choice, in my opinion.

I was just pointing out that alot of the time infantry movement isn't adequite in 'hold' missions. Drop Troops, now that's a different matter...they would be a very good Hammer.

Sentinels aren't my cup of tea (can't make them work for me), but whatever you prefer - maybe you can make them work where I've failed (miseribly).

'Drop Troops, now that's a different matter...they would be a very good Hammer.'

True but Drop Troops can be unreliable. I think its just that I like the idea of Infantry advancing alongside a Demolisher. Thats how I've always pictured the Guard.

'Sentinels aren't my cup of tea (can't make them work for me), but whatever you prefer - maybe you can make them work where I've failed (miseribly).'

Yeh, I love Sentinels* . I've got an army list with 11! in 1000 points. It's on here somewhere, not very old.

I use a varient of this type of tactic, although my hammer consists of 2 Command squads (one including a HSO), an Infantry squad led by Vet Sergeant with plasma pistol/ccw, 2 Commissars, 3 Priests (one for each Cmd Squad and one for the Infantry squad) and one 5-man Ogryn squad led by Bone'Ead with storm bolter...

As for the anvil, pretty much everything else in the army lol.
