Default So I come crawling back for help...

Never thought i'd ever say this... but i'm having problems building a list.

My elysians - no problems.
My doomsdayers - no problems.
Conventional Imperial Guard - Problems.

I am doing the Cadian 8th and my only real requirement is Creed. Where my problem lies is that I find myself running out of points fast, I buy the essentials of a list (scoring units, anti-tank, anti-infantry and a little bit of armor) and suddenly I'm finding myself a few hundread points over my limit.

Now i'm writing for 1750 points.

I made a quick list a moment ago with these sort of units.

Creed squad with auto, plasma, standard and chimera.

Platoon command with heavy bolter and 2 sniper
2x infantry with autocannon and plasma + power weapon
infantry squad with las cannon and melta + power weapon
Commissar with power weapon

Veterans with 3 snipers, heavy bolter and forward sentries

platoon command with 3 flamers and heavy flamer + power weapon
2x infantry squad with flamer + power weapon
Commissar with power weapon

Dakka exterminator

Demolisher

Demolisher

2 autocannon armored sentinels.

Vendetta

For me, this covers what I think I would like for a 1500 point list. But it shoots in a just under my ultimate limit of 1750. I;m on my minimum of scoring for such a list and I think i'm too light on armored units. Having fought more than a few guard armies that many would consider 'normal' i'm feeling like i've gone overboard with something because they seem to have alot more units than this.

Am I even on the right track for conventional guard anymore? Something feels wrong and i'm having a hard time explaining it.

I'd start with droppign the power weapons and PP's from the infantry squads, it seems silly to me. Is there some fluff reason?

Same goes for the Exterminator, it really doesn't seem worth it to me. I know the dakka is nice, but you can get so many autocannons and anti infantry dakka in guard...

The Commisars also seem unnessecary.

Why have sniper veteran when you have Hobbits?

Demolisher v. Standard Russ. Your choice I guess, but it could help you save points.

Then just fill out with plain old infantry squads with an autocannon or Lascannons or something for the extra AT, bodies, and lasguns.

I agree with removing the power weapons and special weapons from your infantry squads. If you really do want SW's in your infantry squads, get GL's because they have a great range and are multi-purpose.

Keep your SW's for your veterans or SW squads.

Also I would drop the flamers from your infantry squads and give them HW's instead. If you want to have some toasty fun buy a SW squad and give them a Chimera.

Your Exterminator, while very fun, is an incredible point sink for what you're getting from it. It's much easier and much more cost-effective to pump out more HW teams.

I think your Commissars are fine, but it is quite hard to fit such an expensive character like Creed into a list smaller than 2k.

Personaly i like Creed, but hes just not a great choice in smller games, i sometimes take him in 3k games, sometimes. unless you do gunline guard, in which case he is epic.

If you'd take my opinion, seven vehicles is not armour shy imo, even if a few are lower AV's. :P

My opinion would be to drop one of the Demol's, and the sniper veterans, shove in some Hobbits-with-guns, and then whatever else you want in it.

Rattlings are a much better way to get sniper fire onto the field.

Ratling have the following disadvantages.

Low Leadership.
Not scoring
Low Toughness

I have included both ratlings and the sniper vets in my new list anyway.
