Help me start IG!

Default Help me start IG!

With about 14 heavy weapons, 17 assorted special weapons, 2 commissars, about 70 guardsmen, and 10 seargents what kind of effective army list could I make, and around how many points could I boost it up to? Thanks in advance.

WOW thats quite a large amout for you not to have a list yet. But ill still be able to help here.

But first i need to know somthing. Are your special weapons on seperate models or are they yet to be built onto models.

how did you get that many models and not do anything with them!!? that would drive me mad!
what heavy weapons are they? what special weapons do you have? which weapons do you prefer? do you have a codex? how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

Heh, gonna be taking this army over from a friend, I guess I probably should of stated that :-X. I have a codex but no experience with imperial guard. The heavy weapons are 4 missle launchers 3las cannons 5 autocannons and 2 heavy bolters. The special weapons are 5 flamers 4 meltas 4 plasma and 4 grenade launchers.

Okay time to sort this mess out a bit.

What we have is-

14 Heavy weapons-
5x Auto cannon
4x Missile launchers
3x Las Cannons
2x Heavy bolters.

17 Special weapons-
5x Flamers
4x Melta guns
4x Plasma guns
4x Grenade launchers

70 Guardsmen (Las-guns im guessing)

10 Sergeants (pistols and CC weapons)

2 Commissars

Okay lets do troops first.
You have approx 70 guarsmen, 10 sergeants, 17 special weapons, 14 heavy weapons we can put into troop choices.

Divide your 70 guardsmen up into 6 groups of 8. leaving 24 guardsmen seperate. Add 1 sergeant to each of these leaving you 4 sergeants. Add a special weapon to each squad and youve got 10 left over.
Each squad is now
8 guardsmen
1 sergeant
1 special weapon

Left over we now have
24 guardsmen
4 sergeants
10 special weapons
2 commissars


Right now you have 3 troops choices with 2 squads in 2 lots and 3 in the other.
Troops 1= 2 squads
Troops 2= 2 squads
Troops 3= 2 squads

Now for the command sections for each platoon.
Make 1 sergeant a junior officer and add in 2 guardsmen and a heavy weapon for each section.
your list should now look like this.
Troops 1= 2 squads and Command section
Troops 2= 2 squads and Command section
Troops 3= 2 squads and Command section

Left over you should now have-
18 guardsmen
1 sergeant
10 special weapons
11 heavy weapons
2 commissars

Okay HQ choice.
Make you remaining sergeant a senior officer or heroic senior officer.
To him add 2 guardsmen and 2 special weapons.
As advisers use your 2 commissars
Now make 1 fire support squad with heavy bolters or auto cannons.
Add 1 anti-tank squad consisting of some lascannons or missile launchers.

After this you should have
16 guardsmen
0 sergeants
8 special weapons
5 heavy weapons.

You will need the Veterans doctrine for the following.
Elites will be hardened veterans consisting of-
1 improvised sergeant (make a normal guardsmen a sergeant or convert him)
3 special weapons
1 heavy weapon
6 guardsmen
Take 2 choices of these.

You now have left over.
1 guardsmen
0 segeants
2 special weapons.
0 heavy weapons
0 commissars
Keep these models as spares or for conversions for later squads/units

Heavy support will be 1 converted junior officer (guardsmen model) and 3 heavy weapons

your list will now look like this.

Doctrines-
- Veterans
- Light infantry
- TBA
- TBA
- TBA

HQ
SO/HSO
2 commissars
2 special weapon
2 Guardsmen
3 fire support weapons
3 anti-tank weapons

Troops
1= 2 squads w/ 1 special weapon per squad and 1 sergeant per squad
Command section- 1x JO 2 guardsmen and 1 heavy weapon
2= 2 squads w/ 1 special weapon per squad and 1 sergeant per squad
Command section- 1x JO 2 guardsmen and 1 heavy weapon
3= 2 squads w/ 1 special weapon per squad and 1 sergeant per squad
Command section- 1x JO 2 guardsmen and 1 heavy weapon

Elites
2 squads of Veterans w/ 3 special weapon per squad, 1 sergeant per squad, 1 heavy weapon per squad

Heavy support
1 JO
3 heavy weapon teams

I think thats all in order now. With some doctrines and wargear you might be looking at 1000-1500pts worth just off the top of my head.
If this is a friends army did he have a list? if so work off that if you prefer.

Thanks a ton Fallen You have no idea how much you have helped me, I posted this on 3 sites and your the first person to help me. Looking to expand in future it is obvious that I need some vehicles. Should I get chimera transports for a mobile army, sentinals for some more support weapons and maybe some countercharge, a hellhound, basilisk, or a leman russ and some of its variants. Is this a big enough infantry base for a solid 1500 army? Or do I need to pick up some more models.

Koggol-

I personally dispise tanks but then again im a Catachan player (so i have to dislike).
But if you want you could take away Light infantry for mechanised and put your troops into Chimeras. A basilisk is only ever good on those massive boards or when you want to shoot onto the table of another game (which my club allows) other wise there practically a waste of points and more for the enemy to shoot at. Sentinels on the other hand i have been a huge fan of. There practicality and abilty to survive despite all odds has helped me many a time, i suggest a few of these.

As for more men, get maybe the battle box ($150 aus), it will give you more men and a tank. im not sure exactly how many pts youd be looking at but id say with the battle box a solid maybe 1500- 1750pts. Enough to have some decent battles anyway.

doctrines you'll need/want as far as i can see wouldl be
-veterans
-mechanised
-Hardened fighters
-TBA
-TBA

your army should come along nicly with what ever you pick up next.

sentinels are always fun to have around and are fairly helpful. chimeras are a more versitile form of tank that also is a transport, but lacks power. if you are going to put tanks in your army, start off with russes cause they are customisable, fairly reliable, and very powerful which as a beginner are very good to use.
