Default Quick Guard fluff question. ** Please look at**

Just discussing with my friend about Guard regiments & themes...

He suggested a UN type thing, only adapted to the imperium of 40k.
So my question is does such a force exist? Or if it doesn't, how well could you incorporate it into the 40k Imperium? (Or is the IG this 'UN force' in the guise of lots of planetary regiments?)

Regiments made up of personnel from different planetary regiments? So you get a mix?

Not by intention, no.

Such forces do exist, but only out of necessity. For example, two regiments go on campaign together - the Cadian 222nd and the Valhallan 108th. Both are reduced to half strength, so the regiment is merged into a single regiment.

However, they would not produce such a force from the offset.

He could easily pull it off by using his guard to represent a planet's PDF. This military force could be something like a UN(with teeth) created by various different nation-states across the planet.

But seriously, a Guardsman, I'm willing to bet, could a) outshoot me, b) give me the beating of my life, and c) shove more squad-based tactics down my throat than I'd ever care to digest. Guard are hard, hard men. Whether or not GW's inconsistent, Marine-worshipping fluff keeps with that, mkay?

Real men fight in tanks!

Either of the above work, or do a very fluff driven list from mid-campaign in some area, where elements from multiple forces are fighting together anyway. It's harder to transfer to another setting, but great in-context.

So what? Do individual planets have nation states across them? Like a unified global government?
That idea does sound pretty good actually, for a planetary PDF

Also, does the imperial nave have small detatchments of troops? i.e marines or paratroopers? basically something like the American Navy SEALS... (not space marines)

The Navy do have troops, but not many. Marines, the Ship's Watch, etc. Enough to keep the ship safe and make forays, but when bulk forces are required they basically press-gang Engineers, Indentured Workers and so forth to make up the numbers.

So the Navy's force could be used for ship to ship boardings, or occassional raids? But it wouldn't be a massive fighting force like the regular army?

Boarding Parties are pretty ad-hoc affairs. It's basically "Right! Everyone grab anything you can use as a weapon and follow me!" Ships would have some form of 'professional' soldier aboard (Storm Trooper equivalent most likely) but their primary fighting role is to either bomb from orbit, or bomb from the air; they do not fight face to face.

One of the reasons for this, by the way, is inter-dependancy. The Imperial Guard have the means to conquer planets, but no means to get there. The Imperial Navy have means to get to planets, but no means to conquer them. This is deliberate; it means if the Guard rebel, their rebellion can never spread beyond their home world. If a Navy ship rebels, the damage caused is lessened because they cannot establish a foothold on a plent to resupply.
