Default Basilisk Question

3 Basilisks are in a battery.

2 of them are behind terrain that completly blocks line of sight, the 3rd isnt.

Does this mean that because 1 can see, the other 2 can just fire through the terrain rather than fire indirectly?

Or will they all have to fire indirectly?

Or will the one that can see, fire directly, and the other 2 indirectly?

I could have sworn I've seen a question like this before. Hmm.

Since line of sight has to be checked on a model basis and not a unit basis, only the model not hindered by the terrain can fire directly, while the other two fire in a barrage.

An alternative is to have them all fire in a barrage, using the first Basilisk as the first blast so you can subtract BS in case it scatters. In this sense, the Basilisk with line of sight would be acting as a spotter for the other two.

Just like if half a squad can't see the can't fire, if half of your battery can't see then they can't fire either.

LOS is measured from the model taking the shot, so if a model cannot see a target they cannot shoot it. Cover saves come into play when you can see the model, but it is obscured by terrain or another squad.

I seem to recall:

an entire unit gets shot at when half is visible --> 4+ cover save
an entire unit shoots when only half have LOS --> only those half that have LOS can shoot

ASCII diagram: "x" = target, "-" = LOS blocking terrain, "0" = shooter

4+ cover save: all shooters (0's) can see, but they can only see half the targets (x's)

only 2 shooters (0's) have LOS, but both can see entire target squad (all the x's). no cover save, but only two shooters can take the shot.

And that applies to a battery of 3 basilisks aswell. if 2 are hidden then the whole squad must fire indirectly?

Well if you want to fire under the minimum range of the indirect fire, then only the one who has LOS can fire. If you're firing over the minimum, then yes they have to use indirect fire in order to shoot.

Um - Are we forgetting that because the Basilisk fires an Ordinance/Barrage shot, that the LOS from the tank/gun to the target isn't going to affect the cover save of the target? Because of this, any cover saves are taken as if the center hole of the blast template was where the shot took place from.

As for LOS for purposes of Direct/Indirect fire, I'm pretty sure that squadrons count like squads for that purpose. I haven't had the rule book in front of me for almost a year (Deployed...), so don't quote me on that.
