Default Death Korps of Krieg

Hello, I'm currently planning to get into 40k and am in the "wondering what army to get before I start spending any significant amount of money" phase.

One of the armies my friends have suggested was Death Korps of Krieg.
Are they a special army, and have special rules/codex, or are they just a paint scheme for IG?
note: I put this here because the fluff said they're an IG unit and I'm not positive where they go.

The Death Korps of Krieg do have their own special rules (in Imperial Armour Vol VI: Siege of Vraks - Part 2). However, you can easily field them using the standard guard codex. If you can use the IA rules, awesome! However, most people tend not to use IA rules.

As far as general battle style goes, they favour trench warfare and wars of attrition. This means lots of infantry and lots of artillery (mortars and the like).

If you want to go all-out, you can field the entire regiment using forgeworld models. This will cost an unbelievably high amount in terms of $$, but will look amazing and get you mad props. Realistically, this isn't such a good idea and you'll be better off using the standard GW plastics. For the gas masks, Pig Iron Productions makes a great little set that I've heard of other people using.

You could also make them yourself with green stuff + bitz, but I honestly can't give too much advice as far as that goes (except that it's a little ambitious as a first project with green stuff).

Yeah, Death corps are cool, but could get the same WOW factor from either creating your own regiment, or using a more outlandish one

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/List...uard_regiments

have a look through that, see if there's any you like , there's a range of infantry, mech, drop troops, the lot

also, for a good majority, you can use the GW plastics, which are so much cheaper than FW, a few conversions here and there, and a different paint scheme, and boom, a brand new army...
Plus there's the added factor of it not costing an...UNHOLY amount of money ;D

although, if you are interested in the FW armies, you could look at the other options they do....unfortunatly, the only other full army they do is Elysian drop troops :\
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog...OP_TROOPS.html
but hey their models are pretty sweet

Also, they do some upgrade kits for Cadians, and Tallarn i think, so you can keep your options open

i'd do some research on different armies before you commit to DKoK, if only for the reason it's awful expensive :\

if money isn't an issue then by all means go for it I think the death corps are by far the most impressive looking of the imperial guard units available but to be honest I don't think it is worth it you will be paying almost double for a squad of ten forge world models compared to other Imperial guard armies available on games work shops website.

If you like the like an army that wears gas masks you could build up an army of Armageddon steel legion from the Imperial guards collectors section of the games workshops website
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/ca...Id=prod1140104
unfortunately those collectors sets don't have command squads or heavy weapons box sets but even so you could still build an army up far cheaper than if you were to buy death corps models

Personally I think Crazy guys idea of using the pig iron gas mask heads to do custom conversions is a much better idea by sticking to the cadian or the catachan boxed sets you get the benefit of all the options available in the sets and can cheaply make a totally unique army.

For example with cadians you could make an army that counts as a modernised death corps regiment maybe they decided to switch to fatigues an flak armour for improved mobility and protection while charging from their trenches or you could make a totally new regiment which specialises in chemical warfare making use of flamers and banewolf fast attack tanks

With catachan's you could make a unit that counts as the Savlar chem dogs http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Chem_dogs
Or a techno barbarian race drafted into the guard for their brutal fighting style again they could use the the banewolf as a way of explaining the gas-masks not because they are great at chemical warfare but simply because they take an evil pleasure in watching the excruciating pain of any thing that falls victim to the banewolf's chemical cannon

Okay, thanks you guys. How different are the DKoK rules? If it just says they all have 1 ld higher or something thats not worth buying a $50 book, I figure.
Also, as long as I'm here, how do I know in general if IG is right for me? I'm also considering Tyranids and Orks right now (apparantly I'm drawn to the mobs)

The DCoK only benefit from the rules if you agree to a game that uses imperial armoury rules and not many people use them more often than not you would be using your standard codex rules.

It's hard to tell what army you should buy your best bet is to try get a look at the codex for different armies to see what they are capable of and read the back grounds at lexicanum and other websites to see which one you get an affiliation for. You could ask your friends to let you play a few games with their armies or go to a GW store and ask them for an introduction game with some of the models they have on display (the one in my area does that anyway) that way you can get a feel for the armies and decide if you like them or not when i started I wanted to play necrons so my friend let me use his army after a few games I got bored of them and ended up startign a guard army

Ask the Veterans & Regulars in their respective Boards, I'm sure they'll help you choose the right army (or armies if you want to choose more than one. :P)
