Default Guard fluff question...

ok, this is an odd fluff question...

do guard commanders care about the men they command, eg, if say they had 1500 men. and 1300 die but the mission is accomplished, would they really be bothered about the 1300 poor blokes who got to meet their maker?

reason i ask is because on the GW web-page, it says that IG commanders are happy to spend their mens lives like ammo...wondering if they consider life to be that cheap...

anyway, thanks for giving your opinion, as i say this is a stupid topic, but hey, now its posted you may as well give your opinion

It entirely depends upon the Regiment and the Planet they come from.

Or how the commander was trained, so, its 100% dependent, and not a constant.

ok, cool

aside from that, i thought the guard (with the marines) were humanity's last line of defence anyway?, or at least thats how i've interpreted it, 1 min GW says they're on the brink of extinctsion, next, they are completely unchallenged, eh?

Well, given the fluff so far I would wager that the majority of them wouldn't care as much as we would today.

The fact is, given the background fluff most humans know that they are in a fight for their species very survival, given that precedent and the Imperial indoctrination that goes hand-in-hand with that, it's entirely likely that the majority will happily sacrifice many men to save the lives of (in their belief) many more.

We have some examples of good leaders, but they are few and far between, though it's interesting to note that many of the "caring" leaders units do better than the apathetic ones...

yes, would have thought that you'd fight for your general all the harder if you know he wont throw you away...

although, i have to admit, it is funny to be a crazed commander right at the top sometimes

besides, if humanity is fighting for its very survival, then it doesn't logically make sense to throw away huge numbers of men...

There are a million worlds in the Imperium. If you assumed that the average population was similar to Earth (ie: about five billion), suddenly manpower seems a near inexhaustible resource.

In addition, with a million worlds, you have a million different approaches to war. Some planets see their troops as the product of decades of intense training, and thus a valuable resource. Other worlds just recruit whatever ganger-scum the Arbites dredge out of the Underhive, and consider them worth somewhat less than the boot-polish issued at muster.

As Wargamer might have said, it can go both ways but all depend on the mindset and values of the said world.

The way I see it, if something like that happened, it would be seen as just a simple overexpenditure of resources in their eyes.
