Default Starting the Guard

Well, to make a long story somewhat shorter, after a year of constant army-hopping and army negligence, I have finally decided to man up and finish an army of some sort. It took a long time to think about which one, but then I saw with my own eyes the divine light of the Emperor himself, and so, here I am, an aspirant Guard player.

But I could use a little help. Our maybe a lot of help. Things have changed since I had first gotten my now-outdated IG codex when I was army-hopping. Now theres a new dex, new units, and everything's more expensive . Money is going to be a big issue here (why does the Guard have so many troops in just Troops choice?), but I will see this army to the end!

What I need help with is army design, mostly for the list and color scheme. I already have some fluff; my army is going to be based off of the Imperial Navy Drops Troops idea at the Fighting Tigers of Veda website, except I don't want to color my soldiers just gray and black, but something different. What might be some good replacement colors? Plus, I need advice on making my army effective against most other armies (lots of ork players out here, last I checked, plus some nids).

So, uh, help? ???

Problem; Drop Troops no longer exists. Air Cavalry took it's place.

An Air Cavalry army list consists of Valkyries (Anti-Infantry) and Vendettas (Anti-Tank/MC). Both can carry up to 12 models. Veteran Squads are the Troops of Choice because when you disembark you're going to need to dish out as much firepower as you can that means arming them to the teeth with 3 Special Weapons and unlike the Infantry Squad, Veterans are BS4 thus having a better chance of hitting. You can also equip your Veterans with Carapace Armor which gives more protection to your Veterans once they off-loaded.

Oh, they don't exist anymore. Oh well, at least I can paint them in more interesting colors now...
And only having a number of elite squads will defitnitly be cheaper for me!

Now, just two more things; 1) Why must Valkyries be so expensive? 2) What does a Vendetta look like?

1) It's almost bigger than a Land Raider. It's very very tricky to deal with; Fast Skimmer and able to Outflank as well as carries much more dakka than a Land Raider
2) It's like a Valkyrie but it carries 3 Twin-Linked Lascannons instead.

You've also go the option of using some of the characters to Outflank units or a whole Platoon. It's not the same as DS, but a great simulation (REAL Airborne don't drop into the middle of a firefight; they drop behind enemy lines and hit from an unexpected direction)

I'm aware of that, but in a real game, you dont have the main element of real airborne troops, the element of surprise, as your opponent can see where you drop your troops....either that or he blows up your valkyrie... irritating

Thats where Creed, Harker, and Al'rahem come into play, by allowing units to outflank. Combine with an Astropath to greatly increase the units coming in from the board edge you want.
