Default Sentinels and choice of weaponry

Im relatively new to guard, and im collecting a catachan army and want lots of sentinels. What weaponry and upgrades should i equip my sentinels with and why/how they would be useful. Im trying to work out what would work against a majority of opposition. Thx.

For effectiveness. Scout sentinels with 3 HK and 3 autocannon.

Heavy Sentinels with 1 plasma cannon and 2 multi lasers.

I find they are the two best setups.

Depends on what you USUALLY go up against, and what role you want for them.

Hoards: Heavy Flamers
Heavy Infantry: Plasma Cannons
Mixed: Missile launchers
Vehicles: Lascannon

Missile launcher is a great all round weapon, it can take on hoards, take out av13 tanks (or rear av 10 on a 3+ if you are flanking them). Sentinels with lascannons make for great cheap anti tank units.

your best bet is in my experience auto cannons and/or multi lasers for infantry and light vehicles and lascannons for tanks. to be fluffy, for catachans, take a few heavy flamers, but i dont.
and always choose scouts over armored.

Quantity has a quality all of its own, so I go with multi-lasers unless they have a specific role. S6 can hurt all infantry, with a fair number of shots, and can put the hurt on transports. And it's the cheapest!

I find specializing them a mistake, as they are not reliable enough to fill any one niche in your army.

Well i am running a lone sentinal (with the intension of getting more) but with one use under my belt so far...

I set it up with a las cannon and sent it to out flank... On the third turn it turns up and pops a land raider crusader causing an annihilation result. The blast is enough to kill 2 extra assault marines. He then went on to kill the rest in combat!! So i would say a small squad of anti tank (las cannon) turning up on the flank can be very nasty. it is also a great cheapish distraction unit.

Keep them lean and mean; Heavy Flamers, Multi-Laser and Autocannons are quite effective and it keeps Sentinels from being too expensive for you to spasm everytime these fragile buggers get blown up.

Also though according to the codex, the sentinels may only have certain weapons if they are painted in a certain way. Is this just an element to make the IG come to life, or is this an enforced rule? coz i am doing Catachan and i would prefer painting all my sentinels camo, even ones with lascannons.

how you paint it has nothing to do with what wepons you can have.

on a side note, camo netting is a worth while upgrade

Um how do you get a sentinel to survive in Close combat? marines glance on 6's and that's still going to be 2-3 glancing hits....
