Default Regarding Heavy Support

I purchased the guard codex the other day simple as an impluse buy and I'm much enjoying it's contense. The way you can set up a guard army to flavor your force the way you want has got me a little hooked so I've started writing up some army list. I have come across one small problem. on page 102 leman russ "SQUADRON" I understand the fluff and this sort of makes sense and it does look cool to have that many tanks rolling around the battlefeild I just don't understand why?

Why would anyone take a squadron of tanks? as soon as one is immobilesd it's dead also with so much fire power you've got overkill but your limited to who you can aim for.

I think I'm missing a large gap in the hobby

can anyone fill me in on this one?

Mostly for the ability to take more Russes and to free up the other heavy support slots for things like artillery batteries, Manticores and the like.

You opponent will probably be facing a line of 14 FA, a somewhat tough nut to crack. And one that won't be falling back.

I also think that squadrons of vehicles get some kind of bonus - I was told I didn't need Spirit Stones on my Vyper Jetbikes (or was it War Walkers...) if I took them in a squadron. I could be wrong, maybe that's Eldar specific?

I'm still not getting it!

To me this is a move by GW to get players to play with bigger forces hence buying more tank so they can make more profit. This is fine I don't mind this move their still a business and they need to make profit. but I just don't get these lager games. they move away from the 1,500 mark which is the size I prefer it's what the hobby was based around for the past decade.

Sorry gone off topic a bit

One crazy tactic is to use 2 tanks per squadron so you can get 2 turns of cover saves from smoke. Since half of the squad is in cover from one tank popping smoke, both the tanks get cover saves.

Team a Demolisher up with a russ and drive both forward on turn 1 and pop smoke on the demolisher (would be out of range to shoot any way) then shoot with the normal russ. Turn 2 drive forward again and pop smoke on the normal russ and then the demolisher can shoot (it should be in range of some thing). On turn 3 both tanks just start focus firing units off the table.

It is a good way to get your Hellhounds and Banewolf across the table, or make heavy flamer sentinels last longer.

By having them in squadrons, all crew stunned count as crew shaken until there is only one left.

The reason they did it, they eliminated the old rules of armoured company, and this is the closest way to get that.

This is good news if true. definitely a plus for having a tank squadron.
You can see them but they can't see you.
