Default Direct Fire

This came up at my last games night, even thought the codex has a minimum range for the basilisk, it can still fire directly, because of a bit in the main rule book saying it can if it chooses to. what the verdict? can it or cant it?

A Basilisk can fire directly. The only ones that cannot are listed as such.

So if you choose to fire directly, you have a minimum range of 0", but if you fire indirectly you have a minimum of 36". Is this correct?

Yes. The minimum range only applies if firing as a Barrage weapon - the Colossus and Griffon must always fire as Barrage, hence "may not fire directly".
