Default combined squads

to my knowledge, a guard squad can only be 10 men, but they have the combine squad rule so tat can have up to 50(?) men?

my question is, when must this combining take place? and does it count as more than one troops choice, as it is made of multiple troop units.

You must declare that you're combining the Infantry Squads during Deployment Phase. If you combined 5 Infantry Squads into a 50-man Combined Infantry Squad, it's now a single Troop unit. It's almost like the reversal of the Space Marine's Combat Squad.

Plus, it turns 5 kill ponts into 1... which is great. also, if you though a commissar in there, well you have one heck of a meat shield, that will not run away.

oh and props to the name. sorry, i did not know that someone else had it.

when you combine squads do they still have to be full squads or could you have say six hevey bolters in there and say they are remnants of other squads? or do they need to be full size squads?

I was wondering when you'd show up ;D

Im fairly sure that they have to be full squads as its done when all your men are shiny and new. i would say that any remnants could join in later on though.

It's all in the codex, and fairly clear, but I'll explain it carefully:

The Infantry Platoon is your Troops Choice.

It consists of the Platoon Command Squad unit, 2-5 Infantry Squad units, and then the optional Special Weapon and Heavy Support squad units. Each of these units is 1 KP.

You may combine any number of those Infantry Squads only, at the time of deployment. Those squads now form one single, large unit. This new unit is only 1 Kill Point. Note that it does not say "part" of those squads - you must take 2 or more complete squads from a single Platoon and combine them together.

The Platoon Command, Special Weapon and Heavy Support squads may NOT be combined into this unit.

You cannot create a unit of only 6 Heavy Bolters. You could create a unit of 3 Sergeants, 3 Grenade Launchers, 18 Lasguns, and 3 Heavy Bolters.

After deployment, the units are set. You can't combine them after that.

Any add-on models you purchased for the Infantry Squads that you combined, will be part of this new large unit. So in the example above about having a Commissar, if he is part of one of the squads you combine, he will join this new unit as well.

Actually you could go:

5 sargeants, 5 GLs (or other SW) and 5 heavy bolters plus 30 lasguns.

the 3 squads is given just as an example not a maximum cap.

That is correct, I was just giving an example of using 3 squads.

Actually if you get 2 50man units and have them side by and there officers behind them yelling first voly fire!second voly fire! with a lord commissar near and the Senor Officer near with his standards that is one powerful meat shield that is damn fearless and is shooting the Emmey to death with there lasguns and the flamers plasma guns flamers and meltaguns adding extra tork.
