Default All Infantry IG Army 1000pts

I suppose it's time to place my mark in the Imperial Guard forum:

I've been collecting Imperial Guard for around 7 years, so I'd like to think I have a bit of experience using them. I've found that I'm utterly useless with tanks, however, hense my preference of all infantry armies.

While many scoff at my lack of tanks (apperently they are the predominant feature of the army), none of my opponants have done so after they've experienced over 100 guardsmen firing at their army! My army never fails to raise eyebrows, especially since it takes about 15 minutes to setup!

Here's the list I took to Conflict Bristol this year. While I came 35th, I blame this all on the dice (honest...) and my silly fanciful plans involving Drop Troops...

First things first; Officers. In small point games I don't see the point in taking anything more then a Junior Officer, and I'd only ever use a Senior Officer in a 1500pts+ game for the leadership bonus. Giving them expensive upgrades = useless, IMHO. You don't want to be having delusions of being an assault army, now do we?

My Doctrines are all directed towards one main purpose - a solid fire point. Be it a line, box, ranks, etc, these doctrines are there to keep the troops in order and top fighting condition. Drop Troops, as I mentioned before, was more of a novelty which totally failed - Special Weapon Teams are a much better option. Conscripts are there to bulk out the numbers, and are also my secret weapon (much like Grots for Orks) - have you ever felt 20 rapid firing lasguns?

As you can see, I keep everything minimalised by the by - I don't believe in 'wasting' points on upgrades I know won't be in constant use. You'll also note that not all my squads have the maximum number of weapon upgrades - each unit has a specific roles which it'll rarely deviate from; leave tactical flexiblity to Space Marines - there's little point handing your opponant more points from killing ten guardsmen because you kitted them out with special weapons they never really needed anyway.

Though I stated guardsmen are not assaulty, they are definately no push-overs on the defensive. All hail Close Order Drill! With careful planning, you can limit nasty 'nid assaults, and drive them back with a hedge of bayonetts and rifle butts!

I'll possibly write up a more detailed collection of my thoughts later, but for now I'll leave it at that.

Oh, one more thing - never underestimate the usefulness of a 5 man ramnant squad!

i think it looks nice, but i must comment on the lack of equipment in the command squads. when push comes to shove, i find that medics, and more weapons are helpful in a shooty army. also, since you seem to want alot of range. a melta gun doesnt do much for that. i would suggest a different weapon, and maybe a medic.but, you dont have to listen to me, cause i play catachans. god forbid.

I used a medic before and I found he wasn't really worth the points. The price is misleading, since he has to be a veteran before the upgrade!

As for the Meltagun, it's a back-up weapon. The Command Squad acts as a 'mobile' beacon, keeping my units in check when I do actually have to move. Having a S8 AP1 assault weapon is handy against approaching Hive Tyrants as well

I try to keep Command Section equipment low, since it's a small and fragile unit that I don't want shot at in the first place. Better to look insignificant then have all my Officers killed early on - the weapons I have gave them are actually a bonus rather then a focus.

i see what you mean. medics always work for me, and for catachans, they are cheaper.as for the melta, it will help against your ever present tyranid threat, but your support squads should have that covered (i.e. missile launchers and lascannons).i would maybe switch it with a heavy bolter or better, auto cannon for power and high chances to hit/multiple shots.let range be your friend so the command squads can remain useful without being in the thick of it

Thing, I do like to keep a little bit of flexiblity in my force. Just a little.

One plan I conceived (yet never had the chance to carry out) was to march two units of 20 Conscripts down the center of the board, with the Command Squad behind to keep them from fleeing, and two Special Weapon teams with Demo Charges. All in all, that would only amount to around 400pts yet cause alot of problems since they can't be ignored, but then neither can the rest of my models...

Target overload, basically.

The main reason I lacked Autocannons was that I didn't actually have enough painted up for the tournament. The actual list I wanted to field was:

looks a little better, but autocannons arent heay bolters. i like autocannons better cause you get a strength 7 for the loss of a shot. the conscript idea is good. i would even venture to give them close order drill and march them straight into enemy lines.that would be awesome. also, flamers are worth the points for them since it negates their bs.

They do have Close Order Drill. Flamer for Conscripts = pointless. You pay more for the same! And don't get my started on Grenade Launchers, etc...

The thing with Autocannons is they are a tad more expensive then Heavy Bolters, hense why I didn't include them. Depending on my opponant, though, I may exchange the Missile Launchers.

the heavy bolter thing makes sence, but flamers on conscripts gives them their best chance of hitting. i think the points are worth it as far as closer ranged shooting. any other special weapon is pointless. that i can agree with.
