Default 3 Flamers + Chimera?

Ok I was thinking of using a vet squad with three flamers, mounted in a Chimera w/ Hull mounted flamer so I can race around the battle field burning horde armies to death > and jump out at the last moment to seize those vital points. But is it worth the points? Would rushing too close to the enemy cause it too be "easy prey" and not worth taking?

Here is some extra info.

My list[1000/1500] is based around being an all rounded army whilst being very mobile, so far my "off my head list" sits at.

HQ - Comand Squad [MOO, Snipers, camp out back]
Tactic: Camp out back with long range troops giving them orders.

Troops1 - Junior Comand Squad (Plasmax3, Vox, Commissioner w/plasma) & Chimera
Tactic: Rush out drop plasma shots, kill MEQS

Troops1 - Infantry Squad (Nade Launcher + Autocannon)
Tactic: To hang out with the HQ

Troops1 - Infantry Squad (nade Launcher + Autocannon)
Tactic: Stay with HQ, shoot, kill etc

Troops1 - Infantry Squad (Nade Launcher) + Chimera w/Heavy Bolter

Troops2 - Vet Squad (3 Flamers + Chimera w/Hull Flamer)
Tactic: Zerg with Junior Command Squad.

Fast1 - Armoured Sential Squadx2 w/ Plasma Cannons

Heavy1 - Leman Russ Executioner / Plasma Cannon + spon

Don't want critizism on list, only really want to know if it's worth getting a vet with 3 flamers in a Chimera.

Thanks

If this is a tactic that you're interested in testing out, consider swapping out the veterans for a Special Weapon Squad containing the same three flamers. The flamers are just as effective in the hands of non-veterans and I don't think that the few extra models in the veteran squad will help you all that much since you're planning to ram them down your opponent's throat. Either squad will wither quickly if your enemy gets ahold of them, so save a few points.

As a tactic, this will usually be a suicide rush. If you can get into range you'll score tons of wounds against low toughness / save opponents and likely force enough armor saves to scare MEQ opponents. The inevitable retaliation (or pre-emptive strike) will likely take out your flamer squad and Chimera but this means valuable anti-tank resources wasted on a Chimera full of guys with flamers.

Overall, I'd say go for it. At the worst this squad would be a great distraction unit.

One Chimera with a heavy flamer will get blown out of the water by a horde opponent (unless he completely forgoes shooting, which he shouldn't). I think that all of your chimeras should take the hull heavy flamer and the veteran squad should have at least one meltagun, just in case. Otherwise your army will be incapable of cracking armour 14 targets.

Don't use veterans! Get a special weapons squad. Take a flamer as you hull and turret weapon. The whole thing costs only about 105 points or so. Very cheap, and extremely scary.

Thanks all for the CCs, very good ideas and didn't think about the distraction part.

There is one drawback - Chimeras are not transport options for Special Weapon Squads.

While they can embark onto and ride in another unit's Chimera (assuming that other unit is not in it at the time), they can't start embarked on it. Also, the tip of the flamer templates from the embarked unit must originate from the rear hatch, so no 3-flamers-out-the-front.

A Veteran squad can take one of those Flamers as a Heavy Flamer.

The three flamer templates from the embarked guardsmen would originate from the top hatch, which is the Chimera's fire point. This would make the flame templates fired by the embarked riders extend 5 inches or so out in front of the vehicle if fired straight ahead.

But...IIRC isn't there a rule for template weapons that states that no part of the template can be touching a friendly model or vehicle? If this is the case, then it would never be legal for embarked passengers in a Chimera to fire a flamer and they would have to hop out before letting fly.

I believe it was FAQed somewhere that in these cases you either ignored the rule for the firing unit or you measured from the hull instead. I can't remember which FAQ it was though; perhaps Witch Hunters.
