Default Sentinel Army/Recon Force:

After the previous thread on Sentinel armies I thought i'd put the list i'm thinking of in a thread of its own to see what you think.

Sentinel Army/Recon Force:

I love Sentinels and have seen an army which used 6-9 a few times, it was reasonably successful.

You can actually get 12 in an army but that probably wouldn't fit into 1000pts.

I don't think its such a bad idea, if you equip your three Sentinel units for a different role :

3 w/ Multi Lasers: 135
3 w/ Lascannons: 165
3 w/ Autocannons: 150

Armoured Fist Squad w/ Plasma Gun, Missile Launcher -
Chimera w/ Multilaser, Heavy Bolter : 170

Platoon 1:

Junior Officer w/ Laspistol & CC weapon
4 Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher

Squad 1 w/ Missile Launcher
Squad 2 w/ Missile Launcher

: 221

Senior Officer w/ Bolt Pistol, Frag&Krak Grenades, Power Weapon.
4 Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher : 79

2 Sentinels w/ Heavy Flamer : 80

Total 1000 Points.

I think that this army can work because these Sentinel squads will be capable of achieving mission objectives such as taking table quarters etc. It is a very Mobile force, which is often a big thing in most missions yet it does not lose much of its offensive fire-power capabilities due to moving. The scout move will allow you to take up key positions and to get your vulnerable Sentinels into or behind cover before they come under any form of really heavy fire-power.

There is also a fire-base which contains 4 Missile Launchers. As Missile Launchers are versatile it should provide a half decent fire-base. Plus the Lasguns can cause some damage.

The Fist squad can either support the Sentinels on the move or stay with the fire-base, they are a reaction unit.

30 Men
11 Sentinels
1 Tank

---------------------------

5 Missile Launchers
4 Multi Lasers
3 Autocannons
3 Lascannons
2 Heavy Flamers
1 Heavy Bolter
1 Plasma Gun

Now that isn't a bad amount of firepower. The comments about Bolters and Pulse Rifles ripping through Sentinels can also be made about them ripping through Guard Infantry squads with heavy weapons.

20 Bolters fire at a Guard Infantry squad:

13 Hits
9 Wounds. Effectively 1 Guard Infantry Squad down.

Against Sentinels:

13 Hits
2 Glances. Probably some stunned and shaken Sentinels, maybe some damage.

Not all that bad a trade off if you ask me. The fact that they cant be hurt at all by many weapons is off set by the fact that 1 really heavy weapon can take one out where as it could only kill 1 Infantry Trooper. But what tips this in the Sentinels favour IMO is the mobility and slightly better CC effectiveness.

-------------------------------------------

20 Pulse Rifles fire at a Guard Infantry Squad:

10 Hit.
8 Wounds. Effectively 1 Guard Infantry Squad down (Although both a special and heavy weapon trooper could still be around if they don't run).

Against Sentinels:

10 Hit.
2 Glances.
1 Penetrating (probably).

So against Pulse Rifles the Infantry fare better I think.

So against Bolters (SM and all variants and SOB) I believe Sentinels fare better and against Tau the Infantry do. When you think of the amount of Tau out there compared to Bolter wielding armies I would much rather have the thing that IMO performs better against the Bolters.

Other Points:
 • I definatley would not put any upgrades on the Sentinels. Due to their reasonable fragility, making them more points would be folly. Its best just to get more of them.
 • This actually makes quite a fluffy Recon Force, with the speed and sentinels.

i disagree, because some h-k missles will be effective against bis armour, esp if your lascannons cant get there quickly enough. also the extra armour would improve your chances against small arms fire and buy you some more time in the long run

HK Missiles are most definatley a waste on such cheap vehicles, it ups the point significantly. I have other weapons that can deal with armour and the Lascannons would be in range just as quickly as the Hunter Killer Missiles on nearly any table going.

Extra armour again needlessley increases cost. You should never put many upgrades on such cheap vulnerable vehicles, you are just throwing points away.

I agree woth wargamer on that. its a very cool list indeed.
But you can actually get more then 12 sentinels into an army (or so i think you can)
Taking 3 sentinals with a platoon as sentinel support will boost the number of sentinels in an army.

Cant take support squads for regular Platoons can you? You just get a command squad for a platoon, not a command platoon for every platoon you take and you can only take support units for the command platoon. So 12 maz I think. Plus I couldnt fit anymore in an army this size anyway.

'Cool list Veq, I'll have to take it on sometime.'

Sure, i'd have a hard time though, i'd imagine this list is rather difficult to use. Still, would be interesting (plus my number of losses has shot up lately from 2 upto 5 so i'm not that bothered by losing anymore :-\)
