Default Question about infatry platoons

My friend is starting an imperial guard army. He loves the conscripts, and Chenkov's whole deal. However, I believe that he thinks that he doesn't have to buy the Platoon Command Squad and the 2 Infantry Squads as well. He believes that the whole Infantry Platoon thing is optional, and a suggested way to fill out one slot, not a concrete thing (I believe, I may be wrong on what exactly he thinks). So, can he just have a pair of conscript squads be his only troops, and not the the rest of the Platoon, even though it says "Composition: 1 Platoon Command Squad, 2-5 Infantry Squads..." He doesn't think that he has to spend the $ and points on the PCS and 2 IS. He also believes the same thing about Kroot Carnivore Squads, that he could have just 3 Krootox riders and not the minimum 10 Kroot Carnivores.

Nein!

Conscript Squad is part of the Infantry Platoon thus he has to acquire the Platoon Command Squad and 2 Infantry Squads which is compulsory if you want an Infantry Platoon before he can get the Conscript Squad.

Yes, he can do that. It counts as the two troop choices. In the old codex it was different, but now it doesnt matter. I see a lot of people use only vets, too. He does need a junior command squad for chenkov to lead, though.

My mistake! The conscripts are part of the infantry platoon. You need the 2 squads and the HQ squad to have the one massive conscript squad.

So, the Codex made it clear and he's being like that? OK, just tell him to play the 4th Edition Imperial Guard Codex.

Tell him to treat the regular squads as the more well trained "veteran" conscripts - not true Veterans, just the conscripts that have lived long enough to be whipping into shape of actual squads. Maybe some day they'll be good enough to reach true Veteran level, if they live that long!

Yeah Zenai hit the nail on the head, you need the platoon, before you can get the conscripts.
