Default Vitting an Evvective amount of troops in 9 Valkyires.

How would you go about doing it?

Here are some restrictions

2000 points
MUST have 6 Valkyries (with rocket pods) and 3 Vendettas
Every troop must be mounted in the flying things
Nothing on table turn 1
No other armor.
Only 1 Veteran squad.
Must be competitve

I'll write up a list to go with this topic of my own devices tonight.

Can't agree with this. By taking Valkyries and Vendettas, you lose points to pump onto Infantry Squads and the firepower that comes with them. Veterans offer better mass firepower to Cavalry elements.

2 Veteran Squads; Grenadiers, 1 Heavy Flamer, 2 Flamers and a Power Fist
2 Veteran Squads; Grenadiers, 3 Meltaguns and a Power Fist
2 Veteran Squads; Grenadiers, 3 Plasma Guns and a Power Fist
3 Storm Trooper Squads; 2 Plasma Guns

With the exception of the heavy flamer, this is probably as good as you're gonna get. Maybe throw a special character or something in there.

The problem isn't getting an effective number of troops, it's getting effective troops. You could easily just take 2 Infantry platoons with 2-3 squads in each platoon, A command squad and either vets or Stormies for the leftovers, but you could do much better with vets. 6 vet squads not only works better with the elite air-cavalry idea, but it gives you more of the all important special weapons you need and at better ballistic skill to boot. A cheap commissar lord tossed in with one of the squads would save you the use of the last 3 valkyries for something other than a command HQ. Stormtroopers would seem a logicla choice, but a group of sanctioned psykers in each valkyrie squadron could be absolutely punishing. Smack a unit with weaken resolve and then unleah your valkyrie's weapons on them and watch them route.

If it were me I'd go with the 6 valks with MRPs and no door gunners, 3 vendettas with no upgrades
3 veteran squads with 3x melta, 3 vet squads with 3x flamer or GL (players choice)
3 psyker battle squads
commissar lord with 25 points to spend on whatver gubbins you want on your general, or alternatively on losing a flamer or GL and adding an extra member to each psyker squad.

I know this isn't in your criteria, but its probably one of your more effective options.

On a side note, you might want to remember that a unit can only come on the table inside a scouting vehicle if it also has scout, so you'll have to deepstrike and you also need to roll all the squads on the same turn that the valk squads come in or they can't come on the board embarked.

When you said this I could not stop laughing. So if a Storm Trooper squad selects airborne assault then they can't flank while if they choose any of the other ones they can!

Yea. It's kind of silly. I'm not 100% sure if I'm right though to be honest. I sort of remember there being an FAQ about this before because Tau had a similar problem where the pathfinders had scout and their mandatory devilfish didn't (or vice versa). I seem to remember the answer being that the transport had to stick around in the deployment zone. I'm also not 100% on the reserves aspect of it so I'll have to double check that in the morning.
