Default Savvy or stupid?

Now, when I looked at Tau fluff a long time ago, I noticed that in the concept and designs on GW homepage for them, the Tau battlesuits used to be armoured mini-dreadnoghts, but they turned them into heavy infantry after it was found the armour made them too strong.
Now, I'm here looking at IG, and I'm thinking, how would a maxed out Sentinal army work?
I looked at the point costs, doctorines, and came up at about nine Sentinals with various armaments, and about two large infantry platoons.
It came out to about 1k points, so now I ask, how well would this work?
I can see that the Sentinals themselves aren't too bad at CC, as long as the opposition doesn't have powerfists or anything. They're also good as tank hunters, and anti-power armour. Then, the large number of infantry can deal with all forms of horde, and the Sentinals themselves can help as a distraction against remaining hordes that the infantry can't kill at range.
Now, I ask, how would that look in other people's eyes?

Bolters, Pulse weapons, and everyting else with strength 4 or higher will screw up that army quickly. They might not actually die easiy but each squad in the enemy army should be able to stall or damage a group of sentinals each turn.

I've used Sentinels to tie up a large Necron squad before in cc. They can do it, just not very well...

My opinion as a full time tau player and part time imperial guard player(lost and the damned, don't boo me!) is - god no! You simply will not get your shots worth out of those 9 guys! For the love of everything that is holy, don't do it son!

Alright, thanks.
I always come up with wacky ideas like this, but then I always know there's something I've overlooked that can screw me over.
Oh, and this wasn't supposed to be a super shooty, like normal IG.
I knew the limitations of Sentinals on the offence, but I guess I forgot that even bolters can kill them, not just pulse fire.
I still want to try it, but I guess I'll have to put even more thought into it if I do.

Actually, are there any suggestions to make it work?
I know that most infantry can't tough armored hulks in CC, unless if they have Stength modifiers like Power Fists. So I'd have an edge there, except against Termies and the like.
Then, if I deep strike it all, with a few squads of Storm Troopser, then I'd have a good firebase anywhere on the field on top of that, and it'll still fit within 1k points. Then I can assault the next turn, and weapons like heavy flamers could become pretty useful, if massed.
Of course, I'd need at lease one dedicated anti-armour squad if I do this, but with three Sentinal squads, I could probably do it without having to worry about the loss of firepower on infantry.
Ideas?

Sentinel Army/Recon Force:

I love Sentinels and have seen an army which used 6-9 a few times, it was reasonably successful.

You can actually get 12 in an army but that probably wouldn't fit into 1000pts.

I don't think its such a bad idea, if you equip your three Sentinel units for a different role :

3 w/ Multi Lasers: 135
3 w/ Lascannons: 165
3 w/ Autocannons: 150

Armoured Fist Squad w/ Plasma Gun, Missile Launcher -
Chimera w/ Multilaser, Heavy Bolter : 170

Platoon 1:

Junior Officer w/ Laspistol & CC weapon
4 Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher

Squad 1 w/ Missile Launcher
Squad 2 w/ Missile Launcher

: 221

Senior Officer w/ Bolt Pistol, Frag&Krak Grenades, Power Weapon.
4 Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher : 79

2 Sentinels w/ Heavy Flamer : 80

Total 1000 Points.

I think that this army can work because these Sentinel squads will be capable of achieving mission objectives such as taking table quarters etc. It is a very Mobile force, which is often a big thing in most missions yet it does not lose much of its offensive fire-power capabilities due to moving. The scout move will allow you to take up key positions and to get your vulnerable Sentinels into or behind cover before they come under any form of really heavy fire-power.

There is also a fire-base which contains 4 Missile Launchers. As Missile Launchers are versatile it should provide a half decent fire-base. Plus the Lasguns can cause some damage.

The Fist squad can either support the Sentinels on the move or stay with the fire-base, they are a reaction unit.

30 Men
11 Sentinels
1 Tank

---------------------------

5 Missile Launchers
4 Multi Lasers
3 Autocannons
3 Lascannons
2 Heavy Flamers
1 Heavy Bolter
1 Plasma Gun

Now that isn't a bad amount of firepower. The comments about Bolters and Pulse Rifles ripping through Sentinels can also be made about them ripping through Guard Infantry squads with heavy weapons.

20 Bolters fire at a Guard Infantry squad:

13 Hits
9 Wounds. Effectively 1 Guard Infantry Squad down.

Against Sentinels:

13 Hits
2 Glances. Probably some stunned and shaken Sentinels, maybe some damage.

Not all that bad a trade off if you ask me. The fact that they cant be hurt at all by many weapons is off set by the fact that 1 really heavy weapon can take one out where as it could only kill 1 Infantry Trooper. But what tips this in the Sentinels favour IMO is the mobility and slightly better CC effectiveness.

-------------------------------------------

20 Pulse Rifles fire at a Guard Infantry Squad:

10 Hit.
8 Wounds. Effectively 1 Guard Infantry Squad down (Although both a special and heavy weapon trooper could still be around if they don't run).

Against Sentinels:

10 Hit.
2 Glances.
1 Penetrating (probably).

So against Pulse Rifles the Infantry fare better I think.

So against Bolters (SM and all variants and SOB) I believe Sentinels fare better and against Tau the Infantry do. When you think of the amount of Tau out there compared to Bolter wielding armies I would much rather have the thing that IMO performs better against the Bolters.

Other Points:
 • I definatley would not put any upgrades on the Sentinels. Due to their reasonable fragility, making them more points would be folly. Its best just to get more of them.
 • This actually makes quite a fluffy Recon Force, with the speed and sentinels.

Remember it's a game of the dice, so it could fall in your favour or his, not to mention LoS, cover or any upgrades you give your senitals.

i think it could work out, but you would need to max out the range and couple the sentinels with one or two armored fist squads that could keep up with them. also i would give them the krak (hunter-killer) missiles and extra armour upgrades for the added versitility

Good advice, pay attention tsumishi. :P

Sentinels are really just there to be utility vehicles. They don't offer up the raw power to be a main fighting force but you can do some cool stuff with them. Tie up infantry that wander in too close and who cannot beat it in combat, block line of sight to vehicle sides or flanks.... hide infantry on the first turn.. you can do all sorts of great stuff with them if you're creative.
