Default Imperial Guard on a budget

My friend wants to make a 1000 point infantry focused catachan force so he can game with us. Now, even to an Ork player like me, Guard are ridiculously expensive. what's the cheapest army list you could collect money wise?

I'd start off with something like a pair of battleforces. That'll give you a great core, as you can spread the heavy weapons throughout the squads, using men left over from the Heavy weapons as the second Platoon Command Squad. Two Battleforces would give you two Troops, an HQ, and a Special Weapon or Heavy Weapon unit depending on how you utilize your bitz, as well as a pair of Sentinels. This should start you off very well towards 1000 and a quick few units like Veterans or snipers or somesuch will make up the difference.

yup yup that's what i'm doing. Two catachan battleforces is the way to go for you my friend. Though I'd also suggest at least one leman russ.

Also I'd consider not spreading out your heavy weapons teams, get two heavy weapons squads and place them with your Two order HQ and have twin linked las, or missile launchers every turn, or just about.

The only issue with fielding one tank is that your opponent will direct all of his AT at it on the first turn. Even AV14 can't stand up forever.

The issue is your budget. I would recommend that you don't buy from GW, but buy from an independent retailer, which can give discounts.

Anyway, two tanks are better than one, but if he lays smartly with one tank (give it camo netting, put it in cover for 3+ save etc) he shouldn't have a problem.

Two LRBT's in 1k points is a large investment. One is plenty to do the job, specially if you're doing Catachans. Heavy armor is rare for them. Two battleforces is a great way to start the army. The only other thing that you will want to pick up is an additional officer model.

Well since catachans are modeled after vietnam, would you even see any leman russes, i mean in veitnam we used only light tanks and MBTs only in the cities right?

Just because something fights in a jungle doesn't mean it was pulled straight from Vietnam.

In World War 2, when the Japanese wanted to invade Malaya. The British was very confident that since Malaya was mostly covered in jungle, which impedes Mechanized elements, the British did not bring any tanks and so will the Japanese. But they were gravely wrong. The Japanese brought in tanks and armored vehicles thus sweeping the British out quite easily.

But this is 40K! :P

Catachan has several Tank Regiments under its belt so you take Leman Russes even if you play a Catachan regiment. But overall, the Battleforces are quite OK for starters.

Tank use in Nam was limited however they were there in large numbers and not just lights and mediums. MBTs were used to great effect both urban and countryside. My opinion is that when the jungle fighters were first made, the artist was NOT thinking Nam. More like RAMBO. It is very silly to think every soldier looked like that in Nam.

Back to topic:

Two Battleforces would be an outstanding start as stated above. Build from there.
