Default Extended carapace - worth it?

Hi all,

Is extended carapace worth it when it costs 20 points?

My mate uses it all the time, and I was just wondering if he is wasting points.

I know that you can get a 4+ obscured wherever now in 5th ed, so it seems like wasted points to me.

However, I guess an armour save is better than no armour save.

A few points here, it's not called extended carapace, it's carapace armour. Extended carapace is tyrannid.

Arguably carapace armour could be a wast of points, it really depends on the force you play. My force features over 200 models, to buy carapace armour for every squad gets really expensive. Perhaps small elite armies would benifit but for others it just becomes burdensome.

Depends on player-to-player, some might agree but only on certain units such as Rough Riders and Ogryns that has to go into close combat or are out in the open for extended periods of time. While others literally use their Guardsmen as Meatshields.

For me, Carapace Armor costs too much and there's always plenty of cover here and there. Furthermore, the Meta game here is that people are armed with loads of Power Weapons and AP1-4 Weapons

I used carapace armor up until my first tournament. I realized I could get another squad and a platoon of conscripts if I got rid of it. It's also VERY pricy if you want to upgrade the HQ squads and heavy weapon platoons. With cover, and just more units, it's more worth it to keep them normal.

As many have already said, it really depends on the player, as well as the army.

For example, one list I was running in friendly games had two grenadier squads, with a HQ (small size matches). For this, I picked carapace for the HQ, just because it fit with the fluff of the army, and gave a better survivability, particularly against the ap5 tac marine forces I was opposing.

Another point is who you are opposing as well. Some armies main weapons might not be ap 5, but a lot of special or heavy weapons could mean that it would be pointless to even get a 4+ armour save. On the other hand, a opposing force with a extreme amount of ap 5 weapons could justify carapace armour, but in moat large games, the cost would be too high.

Thanks for the info guys.

On and warpspiderman, ogryns can't benefit from carapace armour unless they can somehow take stuff from the armoury.

Perhaps when the new 'dex is out, maybe (hopefully) - the Carapace Armour cost might come down a little.

But for it's current cost, it's a little steep, but it does give a slightly better cover save, and it depends on the player, whether or not they take it.

Personally i prefer cameoline as an upgrade, with the amount of cover saves around the majority of your troops get MEQ cover saves.
Still doesn't help int close combat but it helps when holding objectives.

Rumor has it it will be a commandsquad/Vetren only item, really Cameoline is handy because against a shooty army it does give you a 3+ coversave most of the time. However it's essentially useless against armys like orks where their own BS is a good enough cover form their shooting.
