Default heavy weapons teams bases

when playing my IG friends we never quite know what to do about scoring hits on his heavy weapons teams as theres 2 guys on 1 (40mm?) base. the 5th ed rules helped a little to clarify who dies. but i still find them tedious to deal with.
and thoughts on how you deal with it? is there any official ruling on 2 models on one base?

You can always put a counter on the base to specify if one died. In all respects, it's two models on one base. But since on one base makes them more vulnerable to heavy weapons. Just distribute wounds like normal, there is no different procedure for them as other models.

one other thing if the gunner dies the loader takes over the gun (in game term if the guardsmen holding the gun dies you may remove the loader if he's still alive)

But Isn't it funny to think that guard might be able to copy eldar tactics slightly?
You mean "Perform Eldar tactics better than Eldar", right? :P
Not unless the Eldar have an obscure Warrior Aspect that revolves around the complete mastery of the common light bulb.

yeah but say they're partially covered by a blast or flame template. does it count as two hits because they share the base?

A heavy weapon team is 2 models sharing one base, not one 2 wound model. So yes a flamer template causes two hits.

The easiest way to do it is to put each man on a seperate base. But if something like a vindicare assassin targets the gunner and kills him simply take the loader instead because the loader takes over.

however normal guardsmen dont take over if the loader dies.

This should be in the FAQ section of the board.

EDIT: Well if it wasnt it is now.

For now. New codex changes this to a single 2-wound model on a 60mm base.

You sure about that? Because that would bitch slap ALOT of guard players into putting their seperated loader/gunner onto a new base. And believe it or not GW does consider these things :P

Yes, the accidentally leaked reference sheet from the French GW site has "Heavy Weapons Team" as a W2 A2 entry.

Most heavy weapons teams sold for the last few years have come on 60mm bases. While many people take advantage of the extra pieces to make additional teams, they would then fail to use 60mm bases by using the non-HW infantry plastics. That is actually against the rules even under 4th Edition. Just because someone makes extra models with leftover bits from a kit and models from another kit, doesn't exempt them from using the base size from the kit they are INTENDING to build. Imagine if someone made a kitbashed Ogryn and used a 25mm bases... this is the same deal.

I play Steel Legion. My Lascannons and Heavy Bolters came with 60mm bases, while the Missile Launchers came as independent based models. I will have to re-base my MLs (or make scenic bases for them to slot into). However, unlike some of the people on Warseer, I am going to be a man about it and not complain, swear, or throw a tantrum.

See, I fully respect an outlook like that.

How would you deal with the models that had smaller bases in the past though? Would you convert them to the larger ones meant to currently be played?

You can base the weapon on a 60mm round base, and separately base the individual models if you like. This allows you to remove them as casualties separately. You could also peg them to the kit, etc.

I personally don't think that they'll make you place them on the 60mm base because many of the older models came on the cavalry type base, or without one (think the old metal models).
