One command squad is your HQ, which you use the command squad listing under the HQ section.

For your troop platoons, each platoon consists of a command squad, which is always a JO and his 4 guardsmen retinue, and 2-5 guardsmen squads.

your command platoons are great to make special purpose, load em up with special weapons, a command squad can take 4 special weapons,

Here's what i like to field with the drop troop special rule, 4 plasma guns and 1 plasma pistol in the command squad drop this on a pain in the butt unit and watch it fry and remember they're just guardsmen, waste em. :P

I fit my platoon command squads with 4x Flamers and use them as a counter charge unit, screened by one of my infantry squads as I advance. If my infantry die in combat of by close ranged shooting my opponent is in for a surprise...

I personally do 3 plasmaguns and a medic with a plasma pistol/bolter, my regiment has carapace armour, so the medic comes in handy for the plasma overheats, as does the 4+ save, I then equip the officer with a bolter and plasma pistol.

Strategy One: Keep them really close to your troops. Give them flamers for backup as well as carapce armour, or anything that will keep them living a while.
Strategy Two: Don't need to be so close if they have Vox (waste of points for massive platoons, 30pts wasted for 5 squads plus officer)
Strategy Three (Drop Troops): Vox. Keep them away from the enemy if its possible.
Strategy Four (Mech): Vox. Keep them well behind, and advance the rest of the platoon in their chimeras.
Strategy Five (Close Order): Vox and Mortars.
Strategy Six which can be used in any army: Give them a Comissar lend a hand (or stray las/bolt/plasma pistol shot for the cowards)

I have tried a tactic that envolves 2 Mech Squads and 3 Footsloggers.

You have:

Chimera Foot soldiers Command squad Foot soldiers Chimera

REST OF ARMY

Chimeras advance up sides, and unload basic squads (or elite if you like).
These are either a distraction or a flanking force.
Then the rest of your army advances with the footsloggers.

So, basically it is 2 waves, you send one in, while they are dealing with that, send your other one in.
(I recommend using more Chimeras)

Anyway, back to the point.

I would give your command squad either Flamers or plasma. Plasma is great for taking out any elite units / light vehicles that try to attack you, flamers: for taking out any light squads that get near enough.

Hope this helps

If you take plasma, get carapace armour too!

Good point, so if/when (more likely when) the weapons overheat, you are less likely to be killed by it! Always handy. At least it is a squad of about 20, so you have a few to lose before you have to check morale.
