Default Quick Question about IG

Do Imperial Guard armies have lot of wargear options for each of their troops (similar to Space Marines where every unit has multiple options) or are they more like Tau where only a few units have lots of wargear options (basically just the Crisis suits, plus a few little things here and there)?

I ask because I'm considering jumping from Tau to Imp Guard. I have a chance to buy a cousin's friend's fully painted Imp Guard army off of him relatively cheap. I like shooty armies to begin with (hence why looking at Tau and Imp Guard) and strongly considered Guard a year ago when I first started, but declined because it seemed too cash heavy and too many units to build/paint. But one of the things I really liked about the Tau is that I don't have to worry too much about having the proper wargear on my units other than the Crisis Suits. Is wargear going to be more of an issue with Imperial Guard?

Thanks in advance for the help.

It depends largely on the Imperial Guard unit. Storm Troopers (Grenadiers) may take only special weapons and have four options. Infantry Platoons have 9 options (4 special, 5 heavy). Conscripts have 5 options (2 special, 3 heavy). Armored Fist have 9 options (4 special, 5 heavy).

Hope this helps a little.

That does help some. So it is similar with different weapon choices for most of their armies. Do they have an equivilant of the Space Marine Sgt with each squad that can have a wide array of stuff? And is it whole squads with different weapons or just 1 or 2 units in the squad get the special weapon with everyone else having a standard gun?

Thanks again for the help.

they can have a veteran sergeant but they are limited with what they can take(relatively).

For ranged weapons they have a relativly wide selection(about as good as a SM sgt minus the combi weapons. However they can't use any special melee weapons(power weapons/fist) unless they are a special case like rough riders, storm troopers or hardened veterans.

and yes. on the second part

In infantry squads one man can have a special weapon and one man can have a heavy weapon(even though it requires a two man team the second guy has a lasgun like normal) the others have lasgun, though the sgt can have some other gear.

Some specialist squads like storm troopers and hardened vets have the option for more special weapons(though the storm troopers can't take a heavy)

Of course you can take 25 guard to every 10 marines. You should have seen the look on that guy's face when I said "My 500 points army will have 70+ infantry models..."

The guard, quite simply, are about as versatile as marines. The sheer amount of troops they have means you are more likely to have more heavy/special weapons...

E.G (points not exact, using them from memory)

When your enemy takes a 400pt marine army...
10 Marines + Flamer + Heavy Bolter = 166pts
5 Marines + Meltagun + Razorback = 155pts/Total 321
Captain +CCW +Boltpistol = 62pts/Total 383pts

You can have an army in a similiar multi-role style...
10 Guard + Autocannon + Flamer= 81/total 81
10 Guard + Heavy Bolter + Flamer= 76/total 157
Lieutenant + 4 guard + Flamer= 26/total 183ppts
10 Guard + Missile launcher + Flamer; in a chimera with 2 heavy bolters =166/total 349pts
Captain in charge + 4 guard + Flamer + Mortar= 400pts

Marines: 16 models, one ACP, 2 special weapons, 1 heavy weapon, 1 leader
Guard: 40 models, one ACP, 5 special weapons, 4 heavy weapons, 2 leaders

So, I'd say the guard have as many options as the other races, but can take (much) larger quantities of such options.

Yes, you can take a heck of a lot more guard than almost any other army.
