Default How do you tell squads apart?

As the title says, I've doubled my guard army from 65 to 125, and I now have over ten squads with spec. weapons, sgt's and vox casters. As I don't like to spend half an hour after every battle (espesially in tournies) sorting my army I was wondering how you guys sort your army into squads. I'm thinking I might colour the rim around the bases different for each guy.

They will be touched by every sort of plauge or disease to help further make them unhappy, all sickness will blight them. They will have almost no tactics, strategies, but lots of machines so that they can atleast stand up to a foe in battle. They are my tar pit against the Terror. They are the bulk of Humanity. They are my Imperial Guard and they will know much fear!"

You could work it into their uniform.

Right shoulder for Platoon, left shoulder for squad in the Platoon.

That's about what my buddy did. One shoulder has the Platoon markings, where the other has the HQ squad and Infantry squad markings. He does that since he has all of his squads set up the same way: Sgt, Vox, Missile launcher, and Grenade launcher.

I intentionally make sure there is no difference. I know that regardless I will have a certain amount of basic guardsmen with lasguns. As long as I have the correct set up of special and heavy weapons in my squads all I have to do is add a sergeant model and 6 other guardsmen.

Hard to explain, just saying basic guardsmen are generic and don't need to be sorted. I have seen others paint different colours on the bottom (underside) of their bases.

I do the same thing pretty much. I change my squad layouts from battle to battle as I feel like it, so I don't want my models to be pidgeon-holed into a specific unit. I just sort all models with the same armament into the same area (ie. the lasgun section, the flamer sections, the plasma sections, etc etc) and then pick whatever models I need for the squad. Also speeds up clean up and set up as I don't have to fish around for specific squad members. The only time this can get problematic is when there are multiple squads close together, especially in Close Combat, so i just kind of have to remember or rationalize who's with who.

Assembling our large ammount of troops is just part of being in the Imperial Guard. You get pretty good at it the more you play.

I never said I was bad at it... I play a drop troops army frequently, so I've learned to place models fast. Nobody like to sit around for half an hour while you deepstrike 12 squads in one turn. I only meant that having everything organised makes placement faster...

I organize all the squads before I begin playing. That way they're all together before they outflank or deep strike.

I color the bases to represent which Platoon the Guardsman belongs to and make markings to represent which squad Guardsman belongs to.

I don't see why you'd have to make them different... As far as I'm concerned, if all my squads have guys with the right weapons, then what difference does it make?
