Well here I am. Been toying with the idea of an Imperial Guard army for some time and came up with a couple of lists to see what I could come up with which will be listed in due time for you to agree with, take apart or whatever.
I finally decided on going with the Tallarn 89th but I would like to build the Tanith First and Only at some point though i'd have to say that might be just for my collection. Are there any other regiments you guys recommend as an addition to my impending collection or even as a replacement to the 2 mentioned above? I'll post my first army list up in a the next day or two so stick around |

I can recommend these guys too which are gaining popularity: The Death Korps of Krieg - Model range here. Their background here. I admit they are expensive being resin models, but nonetheless, if you have the cash, or even a job, these guys are something to think about. :P Quote:

You could always make up an entirely new regiment (make up a world and everything). I personally think it would be a lot more interesting then just copying off of the Tanith 1st or the Tallarns. Plus, the models for both the Tallarns and Tanith are mostly metal, which I am not a fan of. :funny:

Great to see another up and coming Guard player. And playing Tallarns, no less! I'd love to see how your army is coming along. May I recommend the Hobby section? A nice place to show off your models, and receive praise and constructive criticism as well. Cheers ![]() |

Indeed welcome new recruit. Your score on basic training doesn't seem that great, but I'm sure you will make a competant general. You have my full support.
I look forward to seeing your tallarn. would you by chance be using the metal tallern models or converting your own from catachans/ cadians? May i suggest a painting method as well? - Spray white, - cover all clothe in bleached bone - Multiple washes of devlan mud wash. -Dwarf flesh on skin with a flesh wash... Hope i helped.

Heya Shepard!
Now I'm not necessarily an expert when it comes to the tactical or list building aspects of the Imperial Guard, but I love all of the fluff associated with them and every other race in 40k. There are many more knowledgeable members here that might be able to help you out more, but I'll do my best in trying to help you out ![]() When it comes to selecting a regiment, you have to ask yourself a few questions. What feel are you aiming towards? What fluff do you want to accompany your regiment? Do you want to design your own or utilize a standing regiment. All of these are aspects that you need to toy with before making your final decision. Trust me, its no fun playing an army that you feel no connection to whatsoever. Here are a list of some of the more well known regiments of the most-holy Imperial Guard.

The 13th Penal Legion A.K.A. The Last Chancers
Armageddon Steel Legion
The Brimlock Dragoons
Cadian Shock Troopers Some of the most common armies of the battlefield. The Ultramarines of the Imperial Guard.
Catachan Jungle Fighters
Elysian Drop Troops Forge World models
The Gudrunite Rifles Featured in Eisenhorn
Harakoni Warhawks
Death Korps of Krieg Forge World models
Mordian Iron Guard
Narmenian Armored Featured in Gaunts Ghosts
Necromunda 8th
Praetorian Guard
Sameter Guardsmen
Savlar Chem Dogs
Tallarn Desert Raiders
Tanith First and Only
Valhallan Ice Warriors
Now, lets take a look at those two regiments that you mentioned. The Tallarn 89th were routed and virtually destroyed at Tarokeen, a battle with the Tau Empire. I'm not quite sure that you'd want to have that mark upon your army. Of course its all up to you. Also not that the models are (I believe) out of production, so acquiring such an army would be both incredibly hard and costly. Of course, Forge World produces Mukaali Riders, which are extremely cool looking models. They could add a lot of character to your force should you decided to go down the route of the 89th. The Tanith First and Only are unparalleled scouts, marksmen, masters of stealth tactics, and excellent light infantry. They are said to possess an unerring sense of direction, traits developed for survival on a planet where the forests actually move to conceal the path taken. Verghastite and Belladon claim no such uncanny abilities, but are also proven light infantry specialists, with Verghastite Hive City backgrounds in particular complementing the talents of the Tanith woodsmen. Of course, they are the primary focus in the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, and if you haven't read them yet, I highly suggest you do seeing as they provide a wealth of background of the regiment. Honestly, I agree whole heartedly with Scorpius. Part of the fun of the game is developing your own army that doesn't rely on already established fluff. That way, they can go where they want and do what they want without cries of heresy. You could have a regiment who lost their commander in a titanic battle with the foul forces of the Orks and then a aspiring captain took his place and engaged in a brutal conflict with the xenos, utilizing hit and run tactics. You are only limited by your imagination. Plus, both the regiments that you show interest in are, currently, exclusively cast in metal. It is hard to divulge from the standard positions and armatures of the models without extensive hacking and sawing. Plastics are the way to go. Of course, you wouldn't have to completely design your regiment from scratch. Here is a nice compilation of Guard regiments, from well known to utterly vague. You could select a regiment from that list, learn the basics of its organization, and then flesh it out, giving more character to it and adding your own flare to make it unique. Either way you go, I wish you good luck. Cheers, +1 -AC |
