Default Help identifying a component of a Cadian Guardsman model

I just started cleaning off my first set of Cadian Guardsmen, and I took notice of a part of the model I couldn't identify. In the images below you can see the part around the ankle of the boot. In figure 1 you can see it is definitely on top of the boot, kind of like an ankle guard? In figure 2 you can see that it doesn't go all the way around, so I'm wondering how it realistically stays attached. Is it tucked in from the top of the boot? And in figures 2 and 3 you can see the two flairs coming off the back, what exactly are those? On my first few models that have them I thought they were excess from the molding processes, so I cleaned them off to make it looks like a plain boot. I'm realizing now that this is supposed to be part of the model, but what is it?

Buckles/hinges? Or straps that go through a slit in the boot perhaps?

They would be Spurs, if I'm remembering my terms correctly.

After Rezzy mentioned a buckle I looked again at the model. That could possibly explain the two flairs, but the two flairs are only on the outside part of the leg. The inside part of the leg doesn't have one, so there doesn't appear to be anything holding that side down. I also looked to see if maybe it was a wrap of some kind, but the inside part doesn't blend into the boot, it's definitely on top of the boot. What I did on my models is shave down the inside part so it looks like a wrap.

They definitely aren't spurs. They don't look like spurs and they aren't positioned in any way to function as spurs.

They are buckles.. the front of the boot wraps around and attaches to the opposite side..

They're similar to some of the ork boots where they make little sense :P They're feet, not the greatest of focal points.

Alright, I'm convinced they are ankles guards with buckles. Thanks. The inside part doesn't blend in with the boot, but that is easily explained by having them stitched on or attached invisibly on the inside. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue shaving down the inside or just leave them as they are sans mold lines. Thanks a lot.

I would definately keep the flares there, I always presumed that they were in some way attached to the boot invisibly (and they look cool)
Whatever GW does on the shins just has to look cool from a cursory glance and not need to stand up to close scrutiny

I originally thought I had started cleaning the flares off on all models, but after looking back I only did that to one model (and that was by accident) since at the time of cleaning I wasn't sure what it was. The inside part of the boot I was shaving on all of them up to this point, but now that I've figured out what I'm looking at I'll leave that, too. Ridiculous that I didn't know about either part, but I only removed one? Yeah, I know.

I might keep the legs with the shaved inside separate and later shave off the flares to make them look like boots without ankle guards and use them for conscript legs. Or I might even re-sculpt the inside to put the ankle guard back the way it was.

I always believed they are shinguards like used in soccer. With one strap all the way around and a double buckle on the side of the leg.
