Strange Ways has a great stickied post here that explains pretty much the best start a new IG player can follow.

Basically you will want to start with
1) Cadian Battleforce
2) Cadian Command Squad
3) Junior Officers

The battleforce is the absolute very best start. You'll get 20 troops and 3 heavy weapons as well as a Leman Russ. Sure that Leman Russ isn't going to help get you to the 1HQ and 2Troop minimum, but once you are there the savings from having bought it in the battleforce is nice. Plus the heavy weapons are going to be key to getting some firepower in your army.

The command squad and junior officers will make sure you can get a minimal HQ platoon as well as the command squad for the required initial infantry platoon. Also, if you want to, you can take the tank commander half-model that comes with the Leman Russ and plant it on some guardsmen legs and have an officer for a command squad that way.

After that you have a choice of 1) another infantry platoon (good thing the junior officers come in packs of 2!) 2) armored fist squad (you'll need another box of troops and a chimera) 3) conscript platoon (just another box of troops, but they are rather weak to only have one infantry platoon to back them up.)

Options 1 and 2 I think would be the most recommended path for the start of an IG army. Personally I think it's a choice of how you want to play your army. I went with the above three listed items as well as a second battleforce. That gives me two infantry platoons (6 heavy weapons) a bare HQ Platoon and 2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks. I think that's quite a hefty start of an army. With this setup you can buy a hellhound and use magnets to have it hot-swappable between the hellhound and chimera and you can make an armored fist squad and use the extra 10 models to put another squad in your infantry platoon.

You're too quick Xanzar! And - good post, have a karma. -AC

Welcome,

Have you checked the stickies? You can find some good information in them.
I will give you a link if you have difficulty finding them. (or are not sure what stickied threads are!!!)

I agree with Xanzar, a Cadian battleforce would be nice to get since you would save money rather buying each portion of that battleforce individually. But when you move towards the 1000 points and up try to see what playing style you prefer and are most effective in. Do you like tons of guardsmen? Do you like using tanks and decimating your opponent? Just some things to keep in mind. Best of luck with your Imperial guard!

Also, Imperial Guard will be getting an update soon. Many players (including myself) are holding off until the new release. ^^

The update is still around half a year away, that's plenty of time to get models painted in preparation for the new codex.

Aye it is, it'll be a good idea to just do a fairly generic list though rather then specialising in something like say an excluively Storm Trooper & Grenadier force - you dont want to spend lots on an army now only to find out that you've got things you cant use in 6 months time.
